Is The PS3 Now Considered Obsolete?

ClippTube

It's not being developed for it, therefore it's obsolete.

The PS3 is no longer being sold as new in many retailers. The PS3 Super Slim was being sold for a short while but is no longer being produced AFAIK.

The PS4 has replaced it, so it is now obsolete.

Yes, that is what is called 'Development'.

The PS3 continues to see releases, more so in the Japanese market and smaller markets like South America or Asia, but this is not abnormal at all.  Consoles see software releases long into their life cycle of their replacements because software is still profitable and an install base already exists and this has been normal since even the original NES.  The releases also continue for the sake of smaller 'poorer' markets where there's less investment in new hardware but new software can still be pushed.

Keep in mind that the PS3 is still produced today.  Take a look, you can get it shipped by Prime even.

The releases are just rarely considered newsworthy so most people who don't know much about console sales assume the console vanished from the face of the earth.

Just because developers aren't making games for it anymore, doesn't mean PS3 is "obsolete".

Of which they're completely wrong since the most recent released PS3 game was in April with the English version of Persona 5.

Sony ended production of the PS3 back in May. You can still find some new systems out there, but it's not being manufactured anymore.

Well since the topic was brought back up, I don't think anything will ever have a run as long as the PS2 did or as short as the original XBOX. PS2 may not have been very powerful at all but it had so many good games back in the day and exclusives. Right now the only reason I want a PS4 is for when the new Gran Turismo comes out. I already got a platinum trophy in Ratchet & Clank (speaking of which the PS3 has a good few PS2 remastered games of ones with added trophies) and to bring back my childhood I'll have to get that new Crash Bandicoot remake :)

Entirely depends on what you define as obsolete. The graphics and the power of the PS3 is far surpassed even by the "lowly" PS4 and XBO. Tech has come a long way since then.

Is it still a useful and fun console with a large library? Yes, if you can find a new one or one in good condition.

For Sale: Meraki Bundle

iPhone Xr 128 GB Product Red - HP Spectre x360 13" (i5 - 8 GB RAM - 256 GB SSD) - HP ZBook 15v G5 15" (i7-8850H - 16 GB RAM - 512 GB SSD - NVIDIA Quadro P600)

Umm Fifa 18 is coming to the ps3 and persona 5 came to the ps3. The ps2's last game to come out was late 2013, and fifa 14 also came to the ps2. Regardless, i'd still say the ps3's been obsolete for 2 years now because most games aren't on it anymore.

On a slightly related note, it looks like this year will be the first year where the Wii U has greater software sales than the PS3. So in that respect the PS3 is arguably more obsolete than the very definitely obsolete Wii U

Anything released to the public is now past the R&D / development phase, and thus is technically obsolete. That being said, hardware is still considered current as long as updates are actively being worked on. Considering that the PS4 has taken over the PS3, I'd call it obsolete in terms of new games or features, but definitely still a worthwhile console if you want to play exclusives and can buy one on the cheap.
