The i3 is better in terms of actual CPU performance, but the 7890k is better in terms of the iGPU.

True, but he will likely be running a gpu.

Then the i3 is better. Bearing in mind some games much prefer 4 true cores then 4 threads (basically, any recent i5 would be a good choice).

What's your budget/country?

Are you going to use a dedicated GPU? If not wait for AM4 motherboards, the only APUs worth buying are the A8's with the cheapest possible board to try and hit a $200 budget

If you're using a dedicated card get the i3 6100 with probably an MSI VD board, they all seem to have solid power delivery and USB 3.1

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Keep your rig. IF Zen lowers prices on Skylake by 10%, it could be time to upgrade to an i5 or i7.

Not worth it to swap really, you get a better iGPU, but weaker CPU

Also save up for an RX 470, it's faster by far, more capable of playing AAA games at 1080p , for generally not much more money, especially in DX12/Vulkan

The i3-6100 is the better CPU, with the 7890K having a bit better integrated GPU - good enough for stuff like Rocket league in 1080p.

I would choose the i3. And as people have said, the RX 470.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)
