4k worth it?

I want to upgrade from my rx 480 to a gtx 980ti because the rx 480 won't cut it for the Minecraft ultra+ shader mods (btw if you play max setting with ultra+ or extreme shades a 1060 can get utterly destroyed) and I have 1 1080p monitor right now. Would a 4k monitor be worth it or would it look the same, because I want to make the most out of a new card but I don't want to waste money on 4k, so I could play heavy games at 1080p and light ones at 4k, or get a 1440p monitor and use the 1080p one for multitasking all the time? Thanks!

I would hold off until 4K UltraWide (21:9) are available.

Right now, 4K is not worth it. At least, not for anything but media/content production. Even then, you really need above 30" to get the benefits of 4K on a monitor, much below that and everything is tiny or you have to use scaling, often defeating the point of 4K for production. 

I would advise looking at 1440P 144Hz over 4K, especially if you're gaming. It's actually usable for everyday use without scaling and the higher refresh rate will make more of a difference than 4K does for gaming.

4K is 3840x 2160 and 21:9 doesn't add pixels it just makes the screen wider giving you a better perspective than a 16:9 monitor.

It would have to be a very high res. We may see some at upcoming technology conventions like CES 2017 due to DP 1.4 supporting 8K resolutions. From some very elementary in-my-head maths, which is likely wrong, it would be around 5200x2160 for 4K/UHD Ultrawide.

I think you're missing my point.  4k is 3840 x 2160 at a 16:9 ratio.  How you can make a 4k 21:9 ratio?

21:9 does add pixels, unless you remove vertical pixels and move them to horizontal. (so if you keep the vertical resolution and move from 16:9 to 21:9, you're going to add pixels.)

 

For example, 1080p is 1920x1080 and 1080p Ultrawide is 2560x1080. A fairly significant increase in pixels.

Hold off for the mythical beast? He'd also need a much, much more expensive card to run something of that resolution.

It currently doesn't, as it doesn't exist.

It actually does add pixels, and a fair number of them. I suggest knowing about something before suggesting it.

Uh well I don't think I can do 144hz 1440p because I got a 1080p 144hz and looked in info and it said 60hz and idk how to change on win10 and I used DP
