Unreal 4 Presets for Nintendo Switch

Unreal Engine 4 display profiles show Nintendo Switch should run at 1080p high GFX preset while docked, and 720p medium while in handheld mode

This (almost) confirms that the Switch will downscale undocked, however it's not as detrimental to the console's performance as originally speculated by some.  The presets are set at 1080p on Medium High settings while docked, and 720p low medium undocked.  Since it does run the full version of UE4 and not a mobile renderer, this makes development a bit more flexible on the engine.

Hmmm, I wonder why. Is it possible that the dock provides more power? Did they just use a 720p screen to keep cost down?

when its docked it wont have to worry about the battery so it can raise the clock on the gpu(and maybe cpu)

720p actually looks quite good on many phones and tablets, so its probably an acceptable tradeoff that allows them to throttle the GPU down when away from the dock. Battery life is inevitably going to be a serious concern with this sort of device.

Perhaps.  I just think it's an attempt to increase battery life but perhaps there's more about the dock we're not aware of.  Plus at that size a 1080p screen really isn't necessary.  It's smaller than your average tablet so 720p is dense enough for the screen size.

Eh, it's not a deal breaker for me, but I think if the only reason is battery life then there's a good chance having it plugged will improve performance.  The presets don't tell us if this is only related to its 'docking' mode.

does anyone actually know how the presets look, all we know is how well it performs on those presets, for all we know the presets could looks absolutely terrible

Well for me I want to enjoy the games as a handheld, even at home. And a lot of game will likely run like trash in handheld mode, I see it now- only Nintendo games will probably run perfectly. I hope this is a power constraint and not a power+heat constraint, cause I can settle for a charger to enjoy a full experience, I can't expect much out of battery power TBH

Just download Unreal Engine 4 and see for yourself.

 

Ultimately it's still up to developers on how well games perform on the Wii U Switch (we don't know if this means 30 or 60 fps on some titles).  But the fact that it IS running UE4 is a good sign.

I'll trade off a little bit of quality for performance and battery life on the go.  One of the biggest issues with the first gen 3ds was battery life, and I don't think they want to make the same mistake, especially if this is their true replacement to the 3ds line.

I want the option of quality and performance on the go....by packing my charger. I understand on battery they gotta limit it, but on cord...that'd be kinda dumb

What I meant is you could download the Unreal 4 editor and start playing with the presets of it's various tech demos.

But there's also videos out there showing the same kind of thing.  UE4 still looks plenty good, just less lighting.  It scales nicely (I love messing around in this engine).

720 is perfectly fine for a screen that small. The extra pixels do nothing but drain battery life. AA would help more then pixels. It is like phones. Some have 4K or 1440p screens which is just stupid. 1080p is all you need until OLED comes out and 8K screens that use .0000001w come out

On a mobile device, 720P provides a good balance between performance, and not eye-gouging visuals. 1080P with the full UE4 featureset will require quite a lot more in terms of shading power and memory bandwidth

Half the resolution and lower detail its far too much: games will look like shit undocked. 

 

But knowing how Nintendo refreshes handhelds is no surprise (I.E. Remember the shit screen on the original gba?)

I hear you on the GBA, lol.  There's definitely refreshes planned for this thing.  Just watch in a few years, Switch+ will be marketed as having better battery and performance, and Super Switch will have a capacitive touchscreen).

 

I still think games will look pretty good on the smaller screen regardless.

Are you sure? It's 720p but on a pretty small screen, and Unreal 4's low preset is probably far more technically impressive than anything done on a 3DS or Vita. And then there's stuff like Mario and Pokemon that probably don't even have to be that sophisticated to look fine. It may be disappointing to compare it to a third-party AAA title on an Playstation 4 or something, but I was kinda expecting that to begin with.

 

Obviously its hard to say without some examples, but I don't think it sounds all that terrible, anyway.

I agree, I see the switch as a handheld that is also competing in the living room over it being a living room device being a handheld. my interest in the switch is that is seems to be a nice big step forward for handheld gaming. what I want is it to be good for games and video content. (mostly plex support)

It's not downscaling when the screen is a 720p screen.

Not that bad considering it's going to be on a really small screen, and pretty far from your face in normal play sessions on the go.

 

Pretty sure it's not hard to bring the dock with you when travelling either. It's pretty small.

Seems like they have a more up to date article that says it wont be medium while docked and low undocked, but rather high and medium instead. Apparently this will allow it to match the ps4 and xbox 1 while docked?

Ohhhh, that makes sense.

 

Just to clarify, the leak info itself hasn't changed, it was just mistranslated.  The "Low" setting value in the config file = 0.  Medium = 1, High = 2, Epic = 3.  

 

I believe the consoles run it at "Epic" settings, or a mixed setting (900p on some Xbox One ports for example).  I expect multiplat games to take the same kind of approach for Switch.  Again, these are recommended presets for the system, not necessarily the rule for every game.

The screen is small but the detail is also downgraded not just the resolution. If you add the fact that battery life will probably terrible, yes I am reasonably certain this will suck as a handheld on it's first iteration, mainly because except for the original gameboy, all of Nintendo handheld system have utterly fucking sucked on their first iteration.
