He started another site for cloud storage which is called MEGA. (mega.nz)

Have anyone used mega to store their file??? How was the overall experience???

Also I have a lot of files I would like to transfer to the cloud, which service should I use???  I am using google drive for all the documents I have, but I have some other videos I would like to store too, and my google drive is almost full.

Which cloud storage do you guys use???

i don't think its a safe source to keep your files. google drive is a really good solution. if you are keeping vary big file a nas can also help you can make one with the pi for 35 bucks plus all the drive you need.

PI is forced to USB2, and it's really, really shitty for NAS use.

idk

I see.

You want cheap cloud storage? Amazon cloud drive. Unlimited for 60 a year. Use something like ACDcli or rclone to put it up there in cli linux. Id encrypt everything you put on there, but I have 12TB with no complaints.

What's the cheapest NAS you'd do?

Google drive is the absolute last one a person should choose. Because everything you store, they save on their own servers, even when you decide to delete it.

I used it a little but I don't think it's that good.

Technically that is how cloud storage work, it gets saved on their servers. I'd say eventually the stuff gets overwritten because HDD in a data centre can get expensive if you never delete anything.

Yours faithfully

How easy would it be to create an internet accessible private storage server?

They use every bit of info you saved to the cloud, to their advantage.

That is what Google does.

No no nothing gets over written. Google has data storage farms, they save all your emails, every search you do, even if you do not press enter, and you type in a word and delete it, thats all saved. Youtube, Google Maps, Cloud

EVERYTHING

I dont think people understand this about Google.

There is a reason why Google is so appealing. Its a fucking cobra snake in a teddy bear outfit, sucking on a baby soother.

When a company provide you "free" service or products, you become a part of their product.

And you should stop saying all these cos for once in my life time my google chrome just crashed on my macbook. I think they are listening.

I use Mega.co.nz (now just .nz) all the time to store and retrieve ... files of a certain... um... questionably legal nature. Think Windows and Office ISOs for local reinstallation on my clients computers. (Technically it's legal if one has a right to access the files.) Anywho, the experience is decent, and it's nice that they give you 50GB for free, but nothing comes close to Dropbox for general file synchronisation if you need to access the files between multiple devices and not just back them up.

MEGA's desktop client is dodgy at best on Windows, and sometimes won't detect deletions or additions without a reboot, and often you have to goto Mega.co.nz in order to clear the Rubbish Bin (MEGA's recycle bin) since those files still count toward your 50GB limit until the Bin is emptied.

What I do love is that your files are fully encrypted and decrypted locally on the computer you access the site with - MEGA has no access to the files and cannot decrypt them on their servers. It's all handled via local Javascript based encryption on your PC, which does mean it can lag a LOT if you've got an aging PC, and also explains why certain web browsers don't support the JS methods used by MEGA.

If you've got any other questions about cloud storage in general, quote and reply and I'll get back to you.

Desktop: KiRaShi-Intel-2022 (i5-12600K, 5060 Ti) Mobile: Moto Razr 50 Ultra (Razr+ 2024) | 30GB CAN+US+MEX $30/month
Laptop: Lenovo Yoga 7i (16") 82UF0015US (i7-12700H, 16GB/2TB RAM/SSD, A370M GPU) Tablet: Lenovo Tab Plus (256GB)

WOW. Thanks dude. I have some videos I downloaded from the internet I wanna store. File synchronising is not needed for me. And if I upload it to google drive, my drive will be full instantly.  I will give mega a try for the 50GB of storage. If I encounter any other problem I will tag you or pm you. Thanks!

Edit: And I am learning programming as well. Hope we can have some discussion about it in the future. :D

pretty much what I currently run. I run OpenMediaVault (debian based) with a mish-mash of harddrives over sata2 on a $40 atom itx motherboard inside a $30 case. total is $20 above what a rpi costs without power, and I have significantly more power and I can even run Windows. I have gigabit links to my router and one to my PC for quicker backups.

idk

MEGA is kinda designed to be piracy's wet dream, in essence -as far as they advertise- everything is encrypted, and mega themselves cant access your files and blabla.

that said, depending on your use case, there's a few things i can recommend.

- if it's mostly about having your files *not on your main  rig* but are essentially only gonna be accessed from your local network, build a NAS.

- if it's about data security, dont touch any of the "unlimited storage" stuff, nor would i really trust any of the upload sites like mega.

- if it's about sharing these files with someone else, either use something like mega, or look into ways of transferring them directly, "cutting out the middle man" so to say.

Currently choosing mega cos

  1. Privacy is not my biggest concern....
  2. Building a NAS is fairly expensive and I will not utilise it that much cos I only have several GBs of files to upload.
  3. The whole purpose is just I can upload them, then download those video files one by one to watch it. Or watch it online. It is a famous interview program for a lot of famous actors around the world. I won't mention its name cos LTT's forum is all against pirated stuff.

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.
