Asus GTX680 DC2 or Asus Matrix HD7970

amilatc

Hi,

This thread is bit long but please read :(

I already built my PC with following components,

Intel Core i7 3770K OC up to 4.5Ghz

Corsair H100i CPU Cooler

Asus Sabertooth Z77 Motherboard

Corsair 16GB (4x4GB) Vengeance 1600 Mhz CL9 DDR3 Memory kit

Corsair Force GS 128GB SSD

Toshiba 3TB 7200RPM Hard Drive

4 x Corsair AF120 Fans excluding 2 fans on H100i

Samsung BD-ROM/DVD R/W (SH-B123) Optical Drive

Corsair Vengeance-series C70 Case

Corsair AX750 750W 80+ Gold Modular Power Supply

I'm planning to have a single monitor gaming rig as I don't feel comfortable in playing with 2 or 3 monitors (and I don't have enough space to have multiple monitors). Previously I was concerning to buy the best monitor that I can buy in my country, the Samsung SyncMaster S27A750D (SA750). But then I realized that it is a utter waste of money where I can buy a 27 inch monitor at half the price of SA750 (of course without 3D and 120Hz refresh rate).

So I decided to buy ASUS VE278H LED;

http://www.asus.com/Monitors_Projectors/VE278H/#specifications

This is a simple monitor with no 3D and 120Hz refresh rate.

Along with that i decided to change my GPU options as well. Previously I was planning to buy Asus GTX670 2Way SLI setup. But then again now I feel it is too much considering the capabilities of the monitor. (ASUS VE278H monitor has 75Hz refresh rate whereas 670SLI can reach 90+ fps rate in most games at max settings)

And I feel it is wiser to buy a single graphics card as I can sell it easily once I want to upgrade it to a new one.

So I decided to go for a faster single GPU solution.

Asus GTX 680 DC2 top:

http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/GTX680DC22GD5/#specifications

Asus Matrix HD7970:

https://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/MATRIXHD7970P3GD5/#specifications

I don't want a GPU superior than this (like GTX Titan or GTX690) as those cards do not provide good value for money.

So please advice me on my GPU options to select the best, fastest and most future proof one. :-) (Note my previous GPU option of GTX670 2Way SLI is still open for consideration if my monitor can optimize the usage of that Dual GPU)

Thanks in advance :-)

As a 680 user myself, I'm gonna say you might want to consider the 7970 (surprised?). They'll both excel at any game, but the 7970 (at least the GHz Ed.) seems to have an edge over the 680 right now in more games than vice versa. Plus, you'll get Crysis 3 and Bioshock Infinite.

Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow; Motherboard: MSI ZZ490 Gaming Edge; CPU: i7 10700K @ 5.1GHz; Cooler: Noctua NHD15S Chromax; RAM: Corsair LPX DDR4 32GB 3200MHz; Graphics Card: Asus RTX 3080 TUF; Power: EVGA SuperNova 750G2; Storage: 2 x Seagate Barracuda 1TB; Crucial M500 240GB & MX100 512GB; Keyboard: Logitech G710+; Mouse: Logitech G502; Headphones / Amp: HiFiMan Sundara Mayflower Objective 2; Monitor: Asus VG27AQ

680 for nvidia optimised games and 7970 for amd optimised games. 7970 is better value and even if you play lower end games it probably doesn't matter if it's optimised or not.

i would say go with the Asus Matrix HD 7970 over the 680

I couldn't agree with you more, AMD drivers are just so much more mature at this moment

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the quick replies :)

So now I decided to go for the Asus Matrix HD7970. One local store in my country reported that they have very limited stocks of the card. But unfortunately that is the NON PLATINUM version. But I don't think that it will make a huge difference,

http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graphics-Cards/ASUS-Matrix-Radeon-HD-7970-3GB-Overclocked-Graphics-Card-Review

The only difference (as I know) is in PLATINUM version the GPU is hand picked and slightly overclocked. So I hope that buying the NON PLATINUM version will not impact the overall result of this thread :)

@MSI_PC_GAMER; Yes I know that it is always better to have higher resolution monitor.

But unfortunately there is no single monitor available which is higher than 1080p in my country. People who need such monitors for professional work orders them from relevant brand agents and it will cost double the price that I'm gonna pay to the ASUS VE278H LED. So I think it is a waste of money of buying such a monitor by going through all of those hassle just for play games. What I want is a GPU which will nearly outperform the capabilities of my monitor when I play games at max settings and will continue to do so for a long period (about 2-3 years) of time. :)

Seems like you already bought it, but I was going to recommend that one anyways. I was looking at the Furmark benchmark scores for 1080p and the 7970 beat the 680 pretty hard.
