Buying A Server, What To Get?

lazyfortress
Go to solution Solved by Electronics Wizardy,

That first server I showed you is $10 cheaper though...

What kind of GPU?  Is it one of those integrated graphics or a solid GPU?  I do like that tower though.  I'm gonna see if I can find a cheaper one.

How's this one?:

Its worth the extra 10 bucks, it also has drives and will be faster and its newer.

Normally you get something like a ati es1000. It puts stuff on a screen, nothing more. No 3d support.

Check out the T110 ebay link I posted.  What about that one?

Edit:  Didn't see your post.  Alright, looks like I'm getting that one.

And just to be sure, the T110 is loud, right?  I want it to be loud so people know it's a server.  It looks like an average PC from the outside.

There pretty quiet. You don't want a loud server.

Oh.  Are they louder than a gaming computer?  Does it have the jet engine noise?

Noise doesn't matter, you want it as quiet as possibe, no reason to make it loud.

Trust me, I do not mind noise.  Well, should I get a tower or a regular flat server?

My main question is how am I supposed to run remote desktop.  How can I run CentOS and still be able to access the files on my computer remotely?

I can put it in the basement if it's noisy.  I can put it in the big closet.

CentOS is just the OS, you can create shares on the machine and acces your files on lan that way, but you could also install things like OwnCloud to create your own cloud drive. If you're technically capable, you could setup the machine as an FTP server and get to your files via FTP. There's litterally endless way to get to your files.

if by "Flat Server" you mean a rack: Just get a tower. You can fit 120/140mm fans in most, instead of tiny fans that spin at > 5000 rpm. (1U rackmount servers eg)

Man, I'm still debating.  Do the Poweredge Rack server and the T110 tower server still have the same components?  I still like that rack server...

So I'm still confused.  So I install CentOS, then what?  After it's installed, what free program can I install for FTP?  And after that program is installed, how do I put the server online for remote access?  Do I have to connect the server to something, or what?

This seems to be a big over your head. Id get a small premade nas unit. It will servers files just fine. If you want to have a nas, get something like the small synology i suggested earlier.

If you want to learn how to make websites, you can do that on a normal desktop or altop, if you want to host them, aws has a free small node for 1 year, and that should be more than enough to get started.

I've wanted a legitimate rack server for the past year.  I'm not giving up now.  T110 or the Poweredge 1950?  I just want to know the following:

How to configure the server for FTP/remote access

How to setup the server when I first get it

How to install the OS.

The only thing I want to know now is what server to get.

Id get the t110, its newer and lower power and quieter. You don't need the extra power of the 1950.

FTP is way different than remote access.

FTP is vsftp server in centos, just install it with yum, and enable it in the config file and your good.

SSH is remote access, its on by default, use putty to access it.

For install, put it on a usb stick with rufus and boot from it.

Ok that's what I was looking for.  I'll ask how to access that stuff after I get my server.  For now, that's the answer.

So when I first plug in the T110, I stick in the USB drive.  But, don't I have to connect it to a router via ethernet or something in order to do FTP?

You don't need the network to install via usb. You won't be doing ftp for a bit.

I know. But once everything is installed, what do I have to do in order to put it online and be able to access the server remotely from another computer?

Then partition the drives to your liking. THen mount them. Then setup a cifs/nfs server

Alright.  I'm getting the T110.

Aaaannnnnndd someone bought it. :(

So I was planning on ordering a server from ServerMonkey.  Does my server need raid if I'm only putting in one hard drive?

You can't use raid with only one drive. You should still have a backup. Id look at something like like amazon acd, which is unlimited online storage for 60 a year.

For drives, look at prices, it can olten be cheaper to buy your own drives and add them your selves.

I found a Dell 2U server that comes with no drives, but comes with 2 intel processors.  Should I get that server (it's a Dell Poweredge 2950), or should I one of these:

The server I found on eBay (the Dell Poweredge 1950 1U), or the server I'm building on ServerMonkey with only one hard drive.  Would the server on ServerMonkey be good for my use?

I have a 2950 here it is. It's the bottom one you can have it really cheap if you want to pick it up. I'm in the sf bay. IMG_1012.JPG

compared to A 1950 it give you more he'd slots and pcie slots, but same CPU and gpu. You do have a limit of 2tb hdds due to the raid card.

The way I configured the ServerMonkey server is:

1x Dell PowerEdge 860 G2 2-Port Chassis

1x 2.13 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon Processor with 2MB Cache -- 3050

2GB (2x1GB) PC2-5300U Kit

Embedded SATA Non-RAID Controller

146GB 15K RPM SAS 3.5" Dell Hard Drive

No Optical Drive

Would this be good?

How much, that system is a a lowerend model and will be a good amount slower. Its worth about 40 these days.

Id personally get a small tower server like a t110

I can ship it, but its not gonna be worth it to ship it. Its probably going to be 60+ to ship it to maryland.

Also, Id look for local surplus stores, you can often get servers cheap there.

Oh.  Would it be better getting the ServerMonkey server?  I'm trying to configure a HP ProLiant DL380 G5 8-Port .  What's your opinion on that server?

Configuration:

2x 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor with 12MB Cache -- E5430

8GB Memory Upgrade Kit (4x2GB) PC2-5300F

HP Smart Array E200 64MB RAID Controller (0-1)

1x 146GB 15K RPM SAS 2.5" HP Hard Drive (There's a total of 8 hard drive slots)

1x HP 1000 Watt PSU  (not redundant, what is redundant?)

Can i have a Link please? Are you just configurating these on their site? Normally you can get them cheaper on ebay.

redundant Powersupplys are when you have 2, so one can fail or be replaced without having the system powerofff.
