Father builds prosthetic hand for son with 3D printer

Ethnod

Well this is just about the coolest story I have seen in weeks. Instead of a $30k prosthetic hand the father could not afford he found a open source project online for a prosthetic hand that can be build by a 3D printer for about $5-$10. Incredible

Now imagine if he can build different hands for different purposes like eating, typing, brushing teeth, riding bike etc2. All these will have different strength, weight, surface texture. an so on, while only costing a few bucks. I see a business potential there..

Nice find, and @Woolbeach I know right maybe something can come of this and cut down on those ridiculous prices for prosthetics.

This makes whoever charges 30k for the arm look like a extremely greedy and uncaring person

Your average corporation then :D

Ah no, I'm sure that the prosthetic they were referring to is quite advanced where as this is very very basic. Still, 30k is a crazy amount

And then I ask why does a prosthetic hand cost $30,000.

Depends on the level of sophistication of the arm, and how closely it mimics a human arm. Then there's also the surgery cost of attaching the arm to the nervous system (if it is brain-controlled), but not all arms are. Then there's also the challenge of making the arm light, yet sufficiently strong to perform wider ranges of tasks.

You can attach a peg instead and it'll cost nothing. It'll just not be as dexterous as a real human arm.

While it does get the job done, almost everyone is overlooking its limited functionality. Essentially, its just one big grabber toy without independent control over each finger; don't get me wrong, I am not saying that whats in the video is anything short of amazing, I'm just pointing out a majorly overlooked criteria.

I very much doubt that the majority of people are not aware that this has limitations but for 5 bucks??? 3D printers all the way baby

very good idea. it should be taken up by a small company that makes them and then sells them for like $20 or $30. Then you dont have to buy a 3D printer.

Follow up story regarding this one. New prosthetic hand with electronic sensors being produced for less than $400, all other parts are to be printed by user in a 3D printer so save costs. Also controller for hand is smartphone with app. very impressive, compared to what the Dad did this is light years ahead and much cooler. Man I love 3D printing
