HPE: The Machine

Back in 2014, HPE (Hewlett Packard Enterprise) were working on a never before seen type of computer, called The Machine, where it uses memristors, huge amounts of ram, and silicon photonics. As time went on, reality started to set in, by using never before use technology, bring the entire project out to market, was proven to be impossible. But the folks at HPE aren't giving up that easily and last week, the have revealed a working prototype. The Machine features technology such as

  • Compute nodes accessing a shared pool of Fabric-Attached Memory
  • An optimized Linux-based operating system (OS) running on a customized System on a Chip (SOC)
  • Photonics/Optical communication links, including the new X1 photonics module, are online and operational
  • New software programming tools designed to take advantage of abundant persistent memory.

is capable of transferring data at up to 1.2Tbps (150GB/s of bandwidth) over a 30-50 meter distance. HPE has also demonstrated silicon photonics technology that can move data up to 50 kilometers (30 miles) at 200Gbps.

But the true intentions of The Machine, isn't just about fast moving data at long distances. It's goal was to use NVM (Non-Volatile Memory) a replacement to DRAM, where it consumers less power and low latency optical interconnects. HPE's vision of The Machine, was to use vast amounts of NVM memory, accessible across many SoCs. It's also possible it might work together with current accelerators, like those from Intel, Nvidia, and AMD. While HPE's The Machine, probably won't be out of prototype stage anytime soon, but what's they've learned and designed with The Machine, might be implemented into their future systems.

They might take some of the things from The Machine and use that for future computers and those will be expensive. :D

Management working them too hard, and 70+ hour weeks for projects that went down the drain. Managment only really cared about money
