LGA 1151 upgrade path?

I currently have an i5 6600. I already have a Z170 board. I'm looking at upgrading to an unlocked i7 in a few years when this CPU is struggling. Would I be able to get a cheaper used i7 7700 or only a 6700?

i7 7700k should be on 1151 socket

maybe, i know that you can currently get I5 2500Ks for like $50 here in Sweden. i would guess if you wait 6 or so years you could get one pretty cheap tbh

7700k or 8700K when cannonlake comes around.

the 7700 is afaik not worth it , barely 1% faster if even than a 6700k (clock for clock)

7700k will work on 1151, but not 100% sure for 8700k.

I heard somewhere that all the "Lakes" will be on the same socket, but cant remember where (Not 100% sure, but I think it will be).

Even Icelake and Tigerlake?

 

4 generations from Intel on same socket? Usually there were only 2 generations for the same socket if I'm not mistaken.

1155 - sandy bridge + ivy bridge

1150 - hasewell and broadwell

 

And now they will go with 1151 for Skylake, Canonlake, Icelake and Tigerlake?

I just hope there is acctually some room for improvement on that socket type lol

On a kind of unrelated note. Am I the only one who thinks Kaby Lake is a lame CPU name? I really really like Skylake and Icelake. They sound really elegant and classy. But Kaby Lake...?

I also like Icelake and Tigerlake.

Will probbably upgrade to Icelake once it's released, just because of the cool name
