torque vs top end speed

Can you compare CPU/Motherboard combos with High Torque(ie Semi Truck) vs Top end or speed(top fuel drag racing). I'd like to build a PC that can hand many issues at once. Live streaming, media/internet television/movies, surfing the net, gaming, video editing at the same time...this will be my first build. I could transition into creating videos/live streaming in the future but not sure when. I know many have probably ask these question but my vocabulary/lexicon is limited and I'm not sure what to ask. I'm always learning. In my initial research, I heard that an Intel i7 6core is a sweet spot and anything over 6cores will be have diminishing returns for the price...opinions?

Sort of, sort of not.  Basically with CPU's, you have single thread performance versus multi-core performance.  You can buy chips with great overall multi-core performance for pretty cheap, but such chips (ie: the E5-2670) will likely be a fairly poor performer on single core performance.  Likewise, you can buy very fast CPU's with only a single core or two (ie: Celerons), but if you load them down with multi-thread capable loads, they'll max out fairly quickly.

 

Also, for many SKU's particularly used in laptops, chips are limited not by the physical silicon present, but rather, by arbitrary thermal limits set by the manufacturers in order to ensure proper integration into the rest of the system. 

 

Basically, with your software, you need to determine if it is heavily threaded or multi-tasking, or if it is mostly single-threaded.  If its mostly single threaded, then you are wasting your money going with a LGA2011 platform, even an entry level one.  If you run a load of tasks that simultaneously use the CPU, and have significant requirements in terms of RAM, then you might want to look at LGA2011.

I don't exactly disagree.   But the other issue is, realistically, are you going to literally be editing video at the same time you're gaming?

The hexa core i7 will show diminishing returns in editing videos in AdobeCC but if you are multitasking, gaming, streaming, editing, browsing, and so on. The more cores the better. The 6950X is very expensive and is not justified in almost every use case. Unless you are heavily multi tasking but at that point a Xeon makes more sense

That doesn't make any sense since Crossfire and SLI are the same principally. The functions are the same - their techniques may just be slightly different.

Single thread = 1 task (ie gaming)

you are correct in that I wouldn't be gaming and editing.  I don't know what actually puts x load on y CPU/build.  But i may be listing to live stream while I'm messing around with gaming or editing. Maybe the trick is to have two builds and each one is dedicated to a specific task...one for media/music and other for gaming/ video edit...opinions?

The problem with this question is that GPUs are not always used extensively, whereas any time you have a moving vehicle where the engine and everything is operating correctly, turbo chargers and air intakes are being used, hence the question has no proper place.

 

And why limit yourself to GPUs? What about CPUs? Hard drives? Power supplies even?

I have a decent budget. I tend to keep my stuff for a long time. I'm tired of buying computers with shorter life expectancy. I'd like a system that i don't have to worry about replacing for 4 or 5 years.  I don't expect to be pushing high res....I'm going to buy cheap 1080p 32 in mon/tvs...maybe two.

You're changing what the 480s equate to because you don't like the performance, and in comparison, you might be correct, but in function, the 480s and 1080s are performing the same task. Therefore they cannot be functionally different in an analogy.
