Man I've been eyeing this SSD for a couple weeks now. I found it available this morning at like 4am on bestbuy.com, but I decided to sleep and purchase it when I woke up. I've been trying to find it for purchase nearly all day and the websites are being weird. Some claim "sold out" and other says "not available"

I'm trying Fry's, BestBuy, Amazon, Newegg

Did Samsung push back the release date again?

Great question. I was messing around with my Intel 730 (when changing cases) and I accidentally got a little rough with it. The power connector got the short end of the stick. It got twisted up and broke near the 3.3v leads (Pins 1 and 2). Somehow the ****ing thing is still working! I was pretty ballsy to even try it after the pins broke, but I literally had nothing to lose (since it has most of my main data). I figured if it can't get power, then it can't really do anything. But I was shocked when I saw it pop up in BIOS.

Now I'm a bit nervous about using it for much longer. I seriously feel like it's a ticking time bomb. Honestly I don't even know if I should be worried. It's also a great drive and I would very much like to replace it with another 730. Unfortunately they are like $250+ bucks depending on the site for the 480 GB model.

The 960 Pro 512GB isn't much more (especially when considering it comes with a code for Watch Dogs 2)

Why get a car? Sure you CAN walk everywhere but it's so much faster (I understand the comparison is more of a Lexus to a Ferrari but still)

The difference is a car is faster than walking.

Buying an NVME ssd does not make your PC faster.

Compared to a regular sata SSD it is twice the price.

You can spend the same amount of money on a sata SSD that is 2x the size, doesn't overheat, and performs the same.

Unless you are a video editor or data analyst or something you will notice 0 difference between a sata SSD and an NVME ssd.

Well you could go from a 9 second boot to a 6 second boot (although you'd be approaching the point where your motherboard load screen started being the bottleneck). But you're right, it's not very practical to go for an NVME drive over a SATA drive considering the price difference.

No it also does not speed up boot, you can go look at benchmarks.

Sometimes it even takes longer because PCIe initializes after sata.

As you can see they are all within margin of error.

Storage speed is not the bottleneck of boot times.

Screams gamer? Okay maybe just a little bit. I would say it does so but it's subtle... ha

I also edit a lot of pictures. My post process work flow includes several batch processes on PSD files that are around 150 megs at present because I use a 12 MP DSLR, but I suspect the file size will go up next year when I switch to 36 MP or more.

I have a small desire to get into video, but my patience is limiting. And they would be mostly family stuff.

Ok, so then you should value space more than absurd speeds...

Get a larger SSD instead of a faster one.

500MBps is definitely enough.

I totally hear what you're saying. My thinking is the price of admission for a 480+ GB from Intel or Samsung is getting close to the price of the 960 Pro. The 730 is only $70 shy and the 850 Pro is about $100.

If if I wanted to upgrade to the 960 Pro next year, then I would have to shell out another $220 bucks plus the difference to get the 960. Where as now I would only have to come up with another $100. I'd also be stuck with another SSD and I'd be questioned why I need another hard drive when I just bought one last year.

If a 960 pro is $400 for a 500GB size, then you can get a 1TB 850 evo for that price instead and you get twice the size.

Much better use of money.

Congrats on being able to secure two of them! At this point my chances are highly increased if I travel to China and wait outside the plant to snag one off the line.

Yup I hear you. The only website I was able to find it was Samsung.com directly. They claimed it would be "shipped" by Monday... so yeeeeeeeeeah I hope so. I'm also impatient. Then another 1 to 3 days after they ship it. Sheesh.

I've been giving the "more space" idea a lot of thought. I have all my photos on cloud storage. My documents are on a separate cloud storage. Music is now streaming always. A few FLAC records but ehhhhhh nothing I can't re-download. Games are easy enough to download when I need them. I hardly store anything significant on my PC anymore. Even my bookmarks and extensions are synced with Chrome. I always seem to have 200 GB free on my current 480 GB drive. Maybe sometimes 100 GB free when I load up games from my backlog that I'm probably never going to play.

More space is almost as unnecessary as the speed the 960 Pro provides 9_9 First world problems are great, aren't they? Can you imagine what the Chinese might think if they ever read this?
