75hz with FreeSync or 144hz without FreeSync?

nkucz

Hey everybody,

I'm currently planning my budget gaming computer build for Christmas, and have finalized the list except for a few of the peripherals. I will attach a link the pcpartpicker list below for my build specs, but as a baseline I plan to get a i3 6100 and a RX 470. I'm stuck between two different monitors in my price range, I'm curious if you all think a 75hz refresh rate with FreeSync is better or a 144hz refresh rate monitor without FreeSync.

75hz with FreeSync:

https://www.amazon.com/VG245H-1080p-Console-Gaming-Monitor/dp/B01JGYM5H6/ref=sr_1_8?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1479246408&sr=1-8&keywords=24"+freesync

144hz without FreeSync:

https://www.amazon.com/VG248QE-1920x1080-144Hz-Gaming-Monitor/dp/B00B2HH7G0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1479246831&sr=8-1&keywords=24"+gaming+monitor

Build List:

http://pcpartpicker.com/user/nkucz/saved/x3hgsY

There is another option made by AOC that is 144hz, that also has FreeSync but honestly I think it would be overkill considering my GPU and the games I intend to play. I also absolutely hate how it looks, LOL! But if you think I should get this one instead of the other two options, lmk.

Thanks guys!

i personally prefer max settings
so i would say 75hz freesync,

the higher refresh rate put more load on the GPU
75 with freesync is more than enough to push out solid quality and performance

depends, fps games or anything that requires fast reactions 144Hz but then you will probably need to turn down settings a bit but for anything else the 75Hz freesync is better

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Your computer won't even be able to play at 144fps...

Unless it's minecraft or something.

Using a 144Hz monitor while getting less than 144fps will usually give screen tearing.

Definitely go with freesync instead.

With that GPU you will probably often drop below 75Hz too, so that's what freesync is good for.

Yes I saw the AOC one but I hate the red and black monitors I think it is so tacky, no offense to anyone! Also, as everyone has said and has confirmed my suspicions, with my setup I'll likely never achieve 144 fps and I'm not a hardcore gamer, just a casual one! Thanks for your input tho :)

one thing is that people rarely upgrade their monitor so future-proving on monitors makes sense,  maybe you cant make 144fps today but you might in the future, in any case watch out for those freesync ranges. :-)

I've been recently experimenting with gsync and high refresh rate and I must say, I wouldn't simply go freesync / gsync over 144 hz monitor. The point is that if you play games like on variable 45-50 fps on 60 hz panel with freesync / gsync, then yes, it's a huge game changer. The fluidness is much better. But once your monitor is running on higher refresh rates, the difference becomes smaller and smaller. I can barely spot the difference with playing on variable 45-50 fps on 144 hz with gsync on vs gsync off.

But there's still one thing to keep in mind. If you go high refresh rate, it's very very addictive and it will force you to use higher fps in other games as well just to make it fluid enough for you. For example, the potential 50 fps freesync line becomes like 70-100 fps line just because you've got used to the good stuff. So if you can barely run the classical 60 fps line, you might not want to touch the high refresh rates yet purely from this reason.

I would say it's all depending on what kind of games you play the most, if you're into cs:go, Minecraft or overall games that you'll be able to push 144 fps then go for the 144 Hz but if you're into more "heavy weighted" games like Grand theft auto V, Battlefield 1 etc. then you won't be able to push 144 fps so you'll get screen tearing and for that reason I would recommend going for the 75 Hz monitor

Would this answer change if I got a RX 480 8GB, or should I still go with the 75Hz monitor with freesync still.

480 can probably do medium/high in most games and get 144fps.

Not always,I just picked up GTA V and maxed out my settings,I'm nowhere near 144 fps with my 144hz monitor and get absolutely no tearing.

you probably do and just don't notice it.  I didn't really ever notice it until I started looking into g-sync.  I thought it was rubbish and went back to gaming and within 30 minutes I was shopping for a g-sync monitor because I couldn't un-see it!

Would much prefer 144Hz with no Freesync. I use a 144Hz monitor at the moment and can't say that I'm bothered by tearing. The very rare occasions that tearing is an issue for me I just use vsync and that works fine, I don't notice the input lag in most games.

Congratulations, but that's an anomaly if its true.  Not the standard that most everyone will experience.
