PC being sold with wrong specs.

So I was browsing Laptops while at Wal-Mart and came across this model. It is advertising that it has a Nvidia Geforce 940MX graphics card in it. When I did a dxdiag it showed that it had an integrated Intel HD 520 graphics. In my mind it is a huge difference between dedicated graphics and integrated. I let a store associate know and their response to me was "I don't know anything about computers and you will need to call corporate". So "I" the customer would have to spend time to notify corporate that they were selling a product with the wrong specs. So if for any reason you purchase a computer from Wal-Mart always make sure you check the actual specs first.

It will have both. You are probably looking incorrectly.

The manufacture emails a spreadsheet of the laptops specs to the retailer, assuming HP didn't send the wrong specs (Or that label is under the wrong laptop), it will be correct.

 

Also notice how the laptop has a Nvidia sticker on it, you are looking in the wrong spot. (I don't even know what you are looking at)

Intel HD Graphics 520 is the integrated processor graphics of that CPU, doesn't mean the 940MX isn't also in there. You'll need a better software to detect everything properly.

On Windows you can switch between integrated and dedicated graphics on laptops to save power. the display product is just running off integrated graphics. no disrespect to sales reps but don't expect a salesperson at a discount retail store to know what they are doing, the person you talked to just stocks the shelves and operates the cashier.

look at device manager to be sure. the 940mx will likely be there. Nvidia Optimus tech just switches to the integrated CPU to conserve energy when it can.

Its using nvidia optimus, so it can turn off the dgpu when needed.

 

The igpu drives the screen at all times and the dgpu turns on if needed.

 

Look in device manager.

Literally the next tab over is Render which should be the 940MX.

Those laptops which have both Intel and Nvidia/AMD GPUs, in DXDIAG only intel HD will be shown by default.

If you want to check the GPUs just go to Device manager and display adapter ( under that you can see the listed GPUs that are in the machine ).

Or you can see by right click and go to Graphics Control Setting ( nvidia control or amd catalyst ).

You only saw the 520 because that is the GPU it was using at the time. Put it under load and it will start using the 940. You don't use the dGPU all the time in a laptop because they use a ton of power and would destroy the battery life.

DXDIAG shows 2 tabs for GPU inside for laptops with switchable graphics via Nvidia Optimus. The display tab is showing what drives your screen, and the render tab, which supposed to show you the discrete GPU inside it, will show what GPU that renders needed pixels in applications (it does not mostly drive the displays). If you want concrete info on your hardwares inside your laptop. Just go to device manager through WinKey+X menu or type devmgmt.msc in Run dialog and hit enter.
