Was it just me or was linustechtips.com down for about 30 minutes?

Yes, it's 2871 as in the year 2871. I traveled all this way, back in time, just to help you. And you thought your mama lied when she said you were special. -_-

I hope not! I saw that there was a cached version of the website available but it seemed every link I clicked wasn't cached. What's the point of caching just the home page?

yea it was a 502 for me , funnily enough it was during me watching the wan show part where they said the forum was always stable and stuff

It was the same for me, Cloudflare Error 502 for around 20-30 mins.

The site was down for about half an hour due to a very heavy DDoS attack. This is the first successful DDoS attack against this site in a long time, and we are improving our defences to try and prevent it from happening again.

Is it allowed to say how you plan to defend against that if it's commonly known stuff or are you not allowed to say?

 

If not I understand.  I really like LTT and I wouldn't want any sensitive info revealed that could help some douche bag attack you guys.

 

I'm an MLIS student and I'm currently taking a "survey of info security" grad school class.  Just a week or two ago one of the topics we covered and discussed was something about DDoS attacks and I think I've heard it can be rather tricky and very expensive to set up defences.   Even more expensive if you're paying for corporate grade 24/7 protection/mitigation services.

Really? What a dick! What joy does this bring people? Go do something productive with your life! Like answering, forum, questions... what am I doing here? Well, at least I'm helping people with my free time instead of hurting them!

We already use Cloudflare (a DDoS protection service that also has a lot of other features, mostly to make things faster) on this site, which protects against most attacks. It's only layer 7 attacks, where the site is flooded with legitimate-looking traffic, that are sometimes able to get past, and we have systems set up to identify and block that traffic to minimise its impact. Until today, this combination has been very effective at preventing attacks from having an impact (though the site has gone down for other reasons).

I'm not willing to go into more details than that though I'm afraid.

That's ok.  I appreciate that you told me even that much.  It's smart not reveal any details about security than is safe to.  I wouldn't want to accidentally help the bad guys because I was curious.  ?
