im excited to dump my nintendo shares for a late christmas - they've tanked like crazy the past few days because investors didn't get enough deatails about switch

I hope they'll be announcing some big boy games. Battlefield 1 and Fallout 4 are must haves, Dark Souls 3, Overwatch and The Division would be nice. I doubt they'll get more than one or two of those games, if any though.

Fallout might happen, as skyrim hd seems to be happening from the trailer, From Software is also a confirmed partner

Having your name on a list is a far cry from actually making new games and porting existing games to the Switch. I don't care about it getting Skyrim, it's not exactly a new game. If it does come to the Switch I highly doubt it will have limited modding support like the Xbox One and maybe PS4 version. Nintendo is probably the most closed off console developer, starting with the 10NES chip in the 80s.

Really it doesnt need to have 1:1 AAA 3rd parties, the 1st parties are the killer apps.

It doesn't need 1:1 but it needs some of them at least. I would love to Play BF1 or Fallout 4 while on a road trip or something, which is really the only selling point of this system. Not everyone likes Nintendo exclusives, or likes them enough to drop $300-400 on a new system just for them.

BF1 runs like dung on the other consoles, I doubt it'd be a fun experience on the Switch.

Well it's clear it wont be able to even match the xbone, it's physically not possible in that form factor. So yes we get some alternate or lower (graphical) quality ports probably. To me this is more of a upgrade to nintendo's handhelds. I actually think this is them signalling a pull away from the home console market. *MY TINFOIL SHINES MIGHTILY*

Nintendo really can't compete in those terms. People that want Battlefield 1 aren't going to purchase it on an underpowered system (and this will be underpowered relative to the Xbox One and PS4), so they shouldn't go chasing that market. They need to be the go to place to play indie titles, co-op titles and first party titles. If they can drive enough console sales early enough for third parties to port their games to the system then all the better, but third party AAA titles aren't going to be this system's bread and butter.

 

Personally, I appreciate the kind of games that Nintendo makes. I want to be able to take their "entire" back catalog on the go. Those are the kinds of games I'd want to play outside of my house. I have no interest in Fallout, Skyrim, or MGS5 while on a plane (which is where I'd get the majority of my on the go play time), but a simple platformer or co-op game? Count me in.

 

It's a misconception that third party titles have helped sell Nintendo hardware in the past. Of the Wii's top selling games there may have been 5-7 third party titles in the top 30 games, and maybe one would have been considered modern graphics at the time of its release. I don't think the switch will do Wii numbers, but with their first party production rate and the cost of developing their kinds of games they could do very well for themselves without much third party support.

People who buy a Nintendo console do it for the new Nintendo games like Mario, Zelda et.c, they don't need the AAA titled or the fancy graphics. Great graphics does not mean it is a great game. Personally I will buy it because I want a portable that can play awesome games.

Nintendo has tried to be non-competitive with Microsoft and Sony for the last two generations. They prefer to be viewed as a second console maker in a two console home rather than your primary source of games, at least for the mainstream gamer.

 

The markets they go after are those that 1) People that Love Nintendo games. 2) Have a young family and don't want less violent games to play with their children. 3) People that want a unique gaming experience.

 

It's why you can pretty much be assured that the base Nintendo console will never cost more than the base Sony/Microsoft console. Nintendo can release their console at even $200 and it won't inspire Microsoft or Sony to reduce their prices, because they aren't offering a replacement product, they're concerned with what the other big guy is selling and for how much.

 

 

There are a couple of benefits to what Nintendo is doing with this machine from a competitive standpoint. It offers things that Xbox and Playstation have no interest in doing (portability) and because it's underpowered it means that the development costs should be lower on the device. If they can come to market with an affordable price (ex: $250 for the tablet with 32GB internal flash storage and the base station with 0-120GB HDD storage) and that leads to respectable sales they'll have Ubi/EA etc supporting them with their second tier (AA as opposed to AAA) type games.

 

As long as they make the tablet storage expandable via an SD card and the base station USB expandable they'll be fine releasing something with such limited storage for the base model (larger storage options available).

 

At $250 it's pretty much a no-brainer buy for anyone that has a Nintendo DS or loves Zelda/Mario/Pokemon games. At that point they have a defined market and just have to squeeze $20-60 at a time out of people.

It's totally possible. Nvidia makes amazing chips with crazy energy efficiency. If the Tegra chip is paired with a dedicated GPU it's entirely possible to hit similar performance numbers on a smaller node with the Pascal architecture.

 

At the price point it's highly improbable unless Nvidia does something crazy and sells the chip at almost no profit (I mean come on, this is Nvidia we're talking about), but it's totally possible.

The node means effectively nothing, the power delivery and such would not fit in that form factor either or be battery powered for a reasonable amount of time. We're literally talking about a high-powered tablet

 Probably be 3 hours if its a decently powerful GPU  if it gets 8 hours battery of gaming no one will want to hook this up to the tv cause the graphics will suck

Parker (the "X2" chipset people keep referring to which is based on Pascal but which Nvidia never actually called the X2) uses less power than their X1 Tegra chip and has over twice the GPU power and substantially more CPU power. It has an iGPU with roughly half the performance of the Xbox One. If you use that iGPU as a physics coprocessor (Nvidia referred to special physics APIs for the switch in their press release) and pair it with an embedded dGPU similar to one of the ones the Drive PX2 (2 Parkers + 2 discrete GPUs + various ECC, CANbus, and other car stuff) uses, then you could quite trivially hit Xbox one level GPU performance in a relatively power efficient package (like 1.5x the power draw of the X1ish).

 

The X1 is used in both the Shield TV and the Google Pixel C tablet and both perform amazingly. As can be seen by these two devices Tegra chips can scale based on Power and TDP constraints.

 

Finally consider that you only have to hit XBox one level performance while docked where Power is effectively irrelevant and you mostly just have to worry about TDP. if the dock has some kind of cooling solution (read as fan blowing over the cooling vents) than this is totally doable.

 

When in tablet form you're rendering for 720p instead of 1080p. You're looking at 44% of the pixels so if you scaled every down in power saving modes to about 2/3 total performance you can get really good performance for decent power use.

 

You'd be looking at about the same power consumption at 66% performance for the dGPU and Parker as you'd have for an X1. And my Pixel C can last quite a while under heavy gaming loads on the go.

 

Again though, not saying this is probable, just possible. The Pixel C is a $500 device and most of the hardware it has would be needed in a gaming tablet (it has no LTE radio or anything crazy like that)

Yea except that the shield/pixel C isnt rendering (shield can stream them, but it doesnt render them) AAA games, it's not even close in power. OCing this with an active cooling solution on the dock wont make this reach xbone power levels, there's simply no way they can get that much power and disspiate the heat and have a screen with modular controller docks and an actual dock dock, sd/game card slot. wifi antenna (data too?). Those things take up space.

Looks to big for a 3DS replacement. The 3DS XL is a snug fit in the pocket, the switch with the controllers attached looks bigger than that, nor does it have the screen protecting clamshell design. I'm hoping it sits along side the 3DS in the product line up.

I disagree: They need more 3rd party support in fact. Like I am in the market for a tablet but I wouldn't switch to the switch if I don't have basic to robust tablet functionality: I want my browsing, basic social media apps, ebook reader,etc.

 

If I can do all that and play Skyrim, to me a new Mario it's just an added bonus. A very nice one, but still a bonus.

 

I hope they get this right as a tablet too if they do, they might have something on their hands. But I don't put too much faith in this after all, it's Nintendo we're talking about they're notorious for getting convenient, modern functionality wrong or not there at all.
