Is M.2 SSD worth it for OS / Boot speed up?

Hi,

 

I'm wanting to buy M.2 SSD but something with low storage so I can install my Windows on it. I seen how fast these are, are they worth it when it comes to Windows storage?

Could you recommend a low capacity, 60GB one perhaps that could be useful?

Are you upgrading from a sata ssd or a hdd.

 

I wouldn't upgrade from a sata ssd, id would from a hdd.

 

No use getting a 60gb ssd. Id go 250 or bigger.

I have a Samsung 500gig 950 Pro and compared to a regular ssd they aren't (much) faster at booting.

Only times you get a "woah that was fast moment" is when you unzip large files or transcode video.

850Evo ist still up to date. For gaming m.2 doesn't bring any advantages, as games can handle Nvme Speeds yet, so load times are pretty much the same.

M.2 is worth it because it eliminates the hassle of having to manage those cables.

Now don't be fooled, if the same SSD has both a 2.5" and a M.2 form factor, they're both equally fast.

Grab a M.2 MX300 if you want a cheap M.2 drive.

not worth it, my X99 build boots up basically as fast as my 950 Pro on my main rig and it only has a intel 510 series SSD

trust me the 950 pro is awesome for big files, but nothing special further than that.

Unless you want it for the sequential speeds, Raid 0 will not bring you anything.

TLDR: Your SSD is internally already a RAID array of sorts. Putting several of them in RAID brings nothing but extra overhead. Unless you have specific workloads that benefit from it.

If you are like me and have dozens of programs set to run on startup, an nvme m.2 will make a nice difference. 

 

When you are normally using your computer you probably won't notice it that much, only when you run something that's pretty heavy to begin with. Loading screens in games also get substantially faster, but it won't improve the actual in-game performance whatsoever.
