Will the 7th Generation Intel Processors work with a Z170 motherboard?

The title says it all. I just heard that the i7 7700k benchmarks were leaked, I didn't look at them, but I kind of want to buy it. I just bought the ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero Alpha LGA 1151 Z170 motherboard. It is very highend, and tonight I was about to buy the i7 6700k, because it was on sale. I always watch Linus' videos, and I was a little late to watching the WAN show, so I just watched the latest video a few minutes ago. Linus talked about ASUS boards updating their Z170 boards for the 7th generation intel processors. My motherboard was on the list. Now that the 7700k is leaked and the bios is updating, will I be able to use the 7700k in my motherboard? If this is true, will it be any different if it was in a new motherboard in the future that is built for the 7th generation? Will there be new chipsets or sockets? Thanks.

You might need to update the bios which will require a compatible cpu, get a g4400 or something cheap to update it, or just get a 6700k, really no difference over the 7700k and you don't need another cpu.

Should have bought it... oh well, you've lost your chance (until it comes back again).

Yes. Just update the BIOS and you are good to go.

Socket is going to be the same for Kayb / Skylake. As for Z170 vs Z270 mobos, Z270 will have a few extra perks. But really, unless you are specifically looking for them, it's not going to change anything.

It depends on each motherboard whether or not it will get a BIOS update for the Kaby Lake CPUs, but it's likely that most will. Particularly high-end boards like the Asus Maximus line are highly likely to get such updates.

In fact, it sounds like Asus may have already confirmed it. Keep an eye on your motherboard's CPU Support List around the time Kaby Lake becomes available for purchase and make sure it appears before you buy.

Yes, if the board's EFI has been updated to support it then yes, the number of pins and the layout of pins is the same and support is already in the works

the ENTIRE ASUS Z170 lineup has received or will be receiving a BIOS update to support Kaby Lake, other brands should add it with updates but only ASUS has confirmed it so far.

Any 270/250/210 motherboard will NOT need a bios update.

Any 170/150/110 motherboard will need a bios that supports Kabylake. That means that any motherboard that wasn't bought recently almost definitely needs a bios update, any motherboard bought recently most likely needs a bios update, and from this point forward any motherboard bought will have a lower and lower chance of needing a bios update (as manufacturers will likely be shipping them with kabylake compatible bioses).

Now, for the most part, the only way to update the bios of a motherboard is to have CPU that is compatible with the bios that is on the current board (meaning that if you want to update the bios to support Kabylake, then you'll need a skylake cpu). Another option is bringing it to a local store and seeing if they would be willing (and able) to update the bios for you. With all that said, there really isn't much of a reason to go for a 7700k rather than a 6700k.
