6GB is already not enough...

Gday folks!

I have owned my 1060 for a couple of months now and I love the performance I get from it but the one thing that really annoys me is that 6GB runs out pretty damn quickly. Just playing Doom, GTA 5 or Just Cause 3 is using 4.6 - 5.1GB and I'm only playing at 1080p!

What are your thoughts on this kinda thing and do you feel it's happening with you as well?

I've got a 980ti personally, and haven't run out of VRAM, even with GTA5 maxed out at 2560x1080 (ultrawide).

Yup I was thinking that as well and it's not like the card is struggling. Most of the time I'm in the 60's and in doom around 120-130FPS.

 I was playing rise of the tomb raider on my 980ti the other day and I was using my 6GB of VRAM pretty much the entire time. Its the only game i've seen that in though, everything else for me doesn't come close (i also don't play GTA V or just cause 3)

 

(ROTR DX12, truly maxed graphics, very high hair, and SMAA on a 1080p/60hz panel... results detected by GPU-Z)

Are you sure it's not cached? Just because RAM is being "used" doesn't mean it's in use.

While that level of usage seems uncommon, it is still the case that 4.6-5.1 < 6, so the conclusion would be that even for you it is enough?

Both Rise of the Tomb Raider and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided maxes out the 6GB VRAM of GTX 980 Ti at 1080p when using maximum settings

Texture Quality is one of the settings that consumes a lot of VRAM

I did have frame scaling on though so stuff was being rendered at like 8K

I understand that I'm not maxing out my Vram but I certainly wasn't expecting this much to be used up. I specifically chose the 1060 because of the great performance for the money and it had 6GB of Vram. Thinking 1080p would not use that much in a while but obviously I was wrong because it's already that close.

Don't worry about it. The games are using that much mainly because it can. It's just caching data just in case it'll be used again.

the fact that a game will use more VRAM because IT'S THERE does NOT mean it NEEDS IT or that it will impact performance any noticeable amount...those games would run just fine even on a 3GB card.

I'm fairly certain the textures and such are cached in VRAM, at least that's what I'm finding online.

I have 980tis 4K ultra with 2xmsaa and iv never run out of vram apart from rotr because ultra textures are rediculas 

I play at 1440p now and never break 4gb on ultra

Games tend to make use of what VRAM is available. It doesn't mean that if you were to use a card with less VRAM, then the VRAM would be inadequate.

Game engines like CryEngine will cache data into vRAM. Just because it's VRAM doesn't mean things cannot be cached, like textures.

A well programed game will use nearly all the vram and gpu and cpu power on a pc to get the smoothest experience, whether your playing on a 1gb card or a 12gb card.
