Which programming language?

Hi. I want to start using code academy but i'm not sure which class i should begin with. I want a language that is practical and beginner friendly. Not sure which one to go to, but leaning towards Java. Which do you recommend

Java is very basic and it's easy to learn.

I'd also say JavaScript now that Node kind of puts it in Python's territory.

Java is a mess of code and far from easily translatable.

Python is also used in many places these days, especially for robotics.

I would tell you C++ because after 11, 14, and 17, it's not hard for app developers (though honestly you can get knowledge on that for free via Youtube). Otherwise, Python because of its usefulness as a deployment scripting language and ubiquity in bioinformatics, robotics, and other places.

what do you want to do? Build command line tools, GUI windows programs, cross platform gui, games, websites?

 

no one language is the one to use, they are all tools designed for a different job. Answer the above question and we can better answer your question.

The only way you could consider it a waste of time is if you just decide that personally you don't want to learn it. Java is a capable language and there is nothing wrong with it.
