Fury X vs. GTX 1070

byalexandr

I've been looking at yet another upgrade for my GPU, my 290X Lightning is fast but I'm starting to get to really demanding performance levels. I was looking at the 1070 and the price is okay, it seems I can get an EVGA ACX for $399, but I also saw a Fury X for $379. So I'm wondering which one would be better since I know that the Fury X will destroy the 1070 is DX12 and Vulkan titles (that are bound to come along). That and I'm an AMD guy mostly so idk. But the 1070 is clearly a lot faster at DX11 and lower resolutions, I game at 1080P 144Hz.

Also, what would you guys value my 290X Lightning at? It hits 1200MHz core and 1450MHz memory.

I would wait for Vega 10 or Vega 20 but that's Q1 which is kind of far and tbh I think 980 Ti level performance is more than I'll ever need.

Your i5 is gonna bottleneck tho...

???

It's a 4570, shouldn't bottleneck much if at all. It's not like I have an FX 8350 or something.

No...a i5 6600k bottlenecks a GTX 1070 at 1080p 144Hz @don_svetlio

It will - even the 6600K will bottleneck them

God damn then what should I upgrade it to? I'd like to stay on LGA 1150, do I need a 4790K or something?

Personally I think the 1070 is a better buy because with the Fury X only having 4GB of Vram it is going to be an issue. Yes I know it is HBM but the capacity is just too low for modern and future titles. The 1070 will serve you well and still does well in Vulcan. I use the 1070 on my computer and it crushes everything I throw at it.

My 290X has 4GB, I don't seem to be missing anything. My old 380 had 2GB, only then was it a problem. I don't think 1080p really needs anything more than a 4GB frame buffer. Plus the HBM will help with GTA V and Minecraft and stuff, my 290X doesn't like drawing very far in these games.

The Fury X performs worse in 99% of titles.

If the <1% that actually use vulcan, then it's on par or a bit better than a 1070.

I would rather have

-lower temps

-less power consumption

-less noise

-shadowplay

-8GB vram

and better performance in almost every game except for a few.

For $20 price different, the 1070 is a much better card.

I would say lower than that since the RX 480 is around that price.

~180 USD?

About 5-10% if you OC the i5. At stock it's quite bad.

Isn't this quite dependant of resolution and frame rate?

I have a 1070 and 6600K I use to do some light 4K 60Hz gaming and 1080P 60Hz and haven't had any issues at all.  The 6600K is overclocked though.
