Windows 8.1 released

GoodBytes

Hello,

Friendly reminder, Windows 8.1 is now released.

If you have Windows 8, or Windows 8.1 Preview (beta), you can upgrade to Windows 8.1 official. You can get it Windows App Store.

The upgrade is free for Windows 8 users.

It's being released in sections, and you need to have all Windows Updates installed.

You'll see this, when it's available:

win81.png

Windows 8.1 brings a numerous improvements for the Start Screen, new features to it, including unified search, and the new powerful search system which search Installed Windows 8 Apps (Modern UI apps) and Web searches, and new apps. You can now put side by side Modern UI apps, 50%, and mroe flexibility on the scaling, and stack up multiple Windows 8 Apps side-by-side (more than 2), if your resolution and screen size allows it. Additional features, including opening the Start Screen to the full program list view, start to desktop, and SkyDrive sync and Internet Explorer 11, updates Windows Store and more.

In Windows 8.1 they are changes on how Windows Apps (Modern UI apps) are closed. In this thread I talk about it in more details: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/65414-windows-81-modern-ui-app-swipe-down-gesture-changed-explanation/

So far, reviews are positive. The Verge gives it 8.8 (http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/17/4845142/windows-8-1-review)

Enjoy!

oh god, update to Windows 8.1 for free? Is that their subtle way of telling us that they will be charging for updates in the coming future? Oh man pirate websites are going to have a field day when that comes around

Did it come out today? I just saw that 8.1 was available for download, but I though I missed the release.

Need all Windows 8 updates installed? That is a problem for me because the latest updates stop my computer from booting up.

Is there any improvements? cause you can already get a start button app and boot to desktop on windows 8.0. Anything to get ride of the right side charms bar? that is all that I am interested in now.

Is their subtle way to say they don't charge for updates like APPLE.

It would have been appropriate if the verge gave windows 8.1 a score of 8.1, instead of 8.8.

just a side note, I've personally found that booting to desktop is slower than just booting normally and then going into desktop, but that might be caused by some of my auto start program. YMMV

Be prepared to reinstall your firewall if you use Avast. That was lost when I updated my OS. Also the defender kicked in and took over the firewall job. I had to shut her up and bring back the good old Avast.

Note to SLI or Crossfire users: The update might turn off your SLI or Crossfire. So it's good to check that you're still running with both cards.

They are absolutely no improvements. It' s just a large update that changes "8" to to "8.1", just for shit and giggles . :P
