100% needs a camera on it. You could try make is an amphibious so you can drive it everywhere.

Back up camera, "dash cam management system", proximity alarm, general car alarm, programmable car horn, parametric EQ, SIM or Bluetooth enabled internet radio, USB and aux modes for music playback, an In dash screen for video playback (which is required for back up alarm and dash cam management anyway), steering wheel button control, web browser.

There are some other simple things that would be nice to add, but require it to be more "integrated" into the car, like the ability to control Windows and A/C, door locks, and things like that.

ENCRYPTION IS NOT A CRIME

Making a Pi a bluetooth audio sink isn't a bad idea and not too difficult either. If you had a really good mic maybe it could work as a speakerphone or voice command link to Google Now, too (no clue if Siri would accept that).

If you put in a few IR or Ultrasound range detectors you could make it gesture-controlled maybe. Or just stick a Leap motion controller on there. https://cylonjs.com/documentation/platforms/raspberry-pi/ http://blog.leapmotion.com/integrate-leap-motion-arduino-raspberry-pi/

Not take forever to boot up. Gets to change the volume on the stereo before you finished ordering McDonalds at drive thru..

The Internet is invented by cats. Why? Why else would it have so much cat videos?

Fast boot with a Raspberry Pi is tough, but... Well, cram a giant battery bank in there. If you could use a sense whatsit somewhere in the car's wiring to detect when the engine is off (or just pair a bluetooth ODB dongle and harvest info from the car's computer, useful for other stuff too), you could put the Pi into standby.

  • 2 weeks later...

Two things:

Definitely add bluetooth so you can pair it with your phone. That way you can sync up your calendar and make calls. You would probs also need a microphone. With the mic, you could probs find some VoIP app to allow you to give commands without having to touch it. There's a ton of great freeware out there.
