Best quality components X99 Broadwell-E motherboard

In the presence of the X99 broadwell-e chipset, compelled into a qualitative contemplation not everybody understands yet desires, I'd like you to join me on a journey to find those motherboards which offer the highest quality components for long durability, regardless of what magical feature set they might provide the enchanted user with. Pandered in aesthetically pleasing advertisements to the last and greatest of all enthusiasts dreams, motherboard manufacturers by my reckoning heavily blur the lines between gained actual components quality for better durability and addtional features (peripheral / ports / control / software) to pressure potential customers into buying the latter.

 

Let's take Asus' X99-A and compare it with the Deluxe editon, which expectedly comes with a bunch of accessories, including cards that when bought separately already make up almost 120 dollars in price. Given that the actual price difference is at around 120 - 150 dollars, to me, from a business stand point, there is no more room left for upgrading actual components of the motherboard, such as better chokes, better resistors, additional electrical protection lanes so and so forth.

 

That being said, I've come across the following boards I'd actually deem worthy of quality:

 

Asus Rampage V Edition 10: According to Asus' description and advertising, they've added quality components across the board. This is however hard to believe in my opinion if you look at all the accessories the board comes with, or rather hard to believe that they put much effort into this, other than for making it better for overclocking, which actually is what they advertise this board for, but you get my point I think? What I mean is, that a the Strix could possibly be very much en par with Rampage V Edition 10, with regards to the quality of the components used.

 

MSI X99A Workstation: Now this has crossed my radar most recently and got my attention with military grade components. My provincial feature squeamishness would go into raptures over actual reviews of this board. I also don't know how well overclocking would work on MSI boards, in case I wanted to take that route.

 

Asus Sabertooth X99: Now this would the board I had picked if it wasn't for its outdated Haswell standard and 64 gigabytes of supported ram. However, do I actually need broadwell-e boards to make full use of a 6800k or 6900k processor? Am I able to get the same overclocking results with this motherboard and does 3200 DDR4 memory work with this board after a bios update. Regarding the ram however, I don't think I'd really benefit from going beyond 64 gigabytes with this board ever.

 

What are your thoughts? Have you come across similar candidates or might be able to shed some light on what I've begun so far?

My favorite (and most survived) motherboard brand would be MSI, Asrock, Gigabyte, and Asus WS. 

I haven't had much luck with their consumer line-ups but I have heard good things about them.

MSI Godlike X-99. Supposedly the cream of the crop when it comes to both features and quality of their components.

I think at that price point the only differences are going to be IO, RGB support, and other minor details.

Just keeping this here as a Everyone has RGB now though. MSI started it with the godlike and now everyone has it. I have the X99A Deluxe V2 and the PCIE LEDs are too harsh but the LEDs under the cover for the onboard audio create a mystical under glow. Same with the PCH ones.

With the Asus Rampage V Edition 10, isn't it rather made for extreme overclocking and not durability? Like anything that's beyond 4.5 GHz plus, given what it is advertised for, for people with custom liquid cooling solutions?

For the most part, all 2011 v3 boards are "consumer" enthusiast grade boards.  There are a few server boards out there that support 2011 v3, but they will not support a HWE or BWE chip.

 

I understand that you are on a hunt for the most quality board that you can find, but almost every x99 board is going to be of high quality.  x99 is an enthusiast level platform and all motherboard manufacturers have responded accordingly with quality boards.  This is why a great deal of responses in the "which x99 motherboard threads" include something along the lines of "get the cheapest one you can because they're all close".

 

Of course the boards do differ in quality, but the fact is, they all exceed minimum requirements substantially.

This board appears in both of your threads and seems to be high on your list.  If you have Newegg Premier account, order it and give it a shot.  If you aren't happy, send it back to them on their dime.

 

x99 is not a common platform and workstation boards are even more rare.  Chances of you getting a variety of opinions about this board here on LTT is slim.

 

I personally do not like overclocking with MSI.  Their BIOS UI leaves a great deal to be desired and their VRMs are often weaker than those of competitors.

While I believe this to be the best x99 board you can get, I don't think this board is in your future.  It's packed full of features that you mentioned you didn't need in your other thread.

 

This board is overbuilt and for good reason.  This is the board that most extreme overclockers use to break records.  Power delivery is the best of the best and everything else on the board follows suit.  It's build like a tank and the new Edition 10 is even armored like one.

 

I don't imagine that you plan to do any extreme overclocking and you'll probably be just fine with a lessor board.

X99 is the "enthusiast" platform so pretty much every board is consumer to me. Asrock and Asus make workstation boards and so does Supermicro (but they're more known for server-grade hardware which is a good thing).

I have not. Overclocking is easy on almost any board once you get the gist of it.

Asus tends to be the board for EXTREME overclocking and they had better be for the price you'll be paying. Overclocking TO THE EXTREME!!! should be your last concern when it comes to the motherboard you're buying. Look for reviews that show how the VRM/mosfets work under load, placement of PCIe and what kind, fan locations, and, most importantly, warranty.
