It's just an LCD screen...

Instead of a backlight it uses the white light from inside the case to shine through.

LCD panels are transparent...that's how they let light through.

I don't understand why people are so surprised.

I'm even wondering, if you have an old LCD monitor around, how easy is it to remove the backlight...
