I have the opportunity to grab a used Maxwell Titan (Used for like 9 months never Oc'd) but I'm wondering what kind of performance gains I would get with the Pascal titan? I'll be up front I can scoop up the Maxwell version for $720 USD. I'm just not sure if I should pony up the rest of the cash and just go with Pascal. I'm not dying to be on the bleeding edge but I'm just not sure if the little performance gain would be worth that extra cash. Let me know what you guys think! As always I'm sure it will be helpful.

I'd argue less, since you can get aftermarket 980ti's for 350ish. But lol those poor sods who sold their 980ti's for less than 300 for a bit there...

Get one off /r/hardwareswap and pay with goods and services, buy from someone with good rep and you'll have no issues at all.  I've bought and sold THOUSANDS of dollars worth of hardware there, never had any major problems that couldn't be fixed by contacting the seller.

Just browse the used sites, they pop up now and then. This guy found one a while ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/3qjze4/is_it_a_good_deal_to_get_a_gtx_titan_for_400/

You can also get them for online stores like amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00BIUKH04/ref=dp_olp_0?ie=UTF8&condition=all

But the reason they are this cheap is because the 1070 is better, and also costs $400.

This is true. But I like the extra bit of VRAM the titan X offers. I was looking at the MSI 1080's though. If newegg finally has them back in stock that might be what I settle with.

1. in gaming applications the 1080 does not hit the VRAM limit. 2. the 1080 outperforms the titan maxwell by a mile.

I've hit it in rise of the tomb raider @ 1440p max every setting, but I didn't really have playable FPS before I hit the limit either.  I was already creeping into the 30's and 40's at times, turning AA off and 2 other settings fixed it and gives me ~65-80 whilst making the game look barely any "worse"

In fairness as well, as the Titan X maxwell vs 980ti showed, you can hit vram cap on a card with less vram and not have it affect performance to any significant degree (while the same card with much more vram might use an excessive amount just because.)

And thus another card that doesn't scale well with voltage, that really needs cool Temps for electron migration diminshment...

The Pascal Titan X is about 70% faster than the Maxwell Titan/980 Ti/1070, which is huge for a single generation. But it's also $1200, of course.

$720 is nearly double what I'd pay for a Maxwell Titan X right now.

There are only 2 reasons to remotely consider a Maxwell top card (980ti or Titan M) currently. 1) You need the FP64 compute performance (ie not games). 2) Its such a great deal and the lower performance isn't an issue, and by a deal I mean its quite a bit cheaper than a 1070.

Even with ln2 and more voltage they don't scale for shit really.  I'm afraid it will probably get worse too, the more we shrink processes and the more transistors we cram in, the more this issue will happen.

Biggest issue is getting rid of immense amount of heat in the internals of the chip fast enough, the smaller we make the process the worse it will get I think.
