Gtx 770 2gb vs HD 7950 3gb

GTA V uses quite a bit of VRAM but the 770 stil outshines the weaker 7950 and for $55 that 770 is definitely worth it. Sure the 7950 has that extra 1GB of VRAM but the weaker GPU cannot keep up against the faster 770 despite the 2GB VRAM. So in the end the 7950 having 3GB of VRAM is somewhat pointless.

Hello everyone!

Currently, I have a +- 4 year old pc rocking an i7 3770 together with a radeon hd 7950 (3gb)

A friend now sells his old gtx 770 to me, but it only has 2gbs of vram. He asks 50 euros (=55 usd?) for the 770.

Will the vram limit my 1080p gaming experience? Is the 50 euros worth it? When I look up benchmarks at anandtech.com/bench the 770 shows a performance increase of about 20%.

Thanks in advance!

I have a gtx770, 50€ is i think a decent price for the card. I have to say i dunno how it compares to the radeon card you have in raw performance but 2gb of vram is definitely a limiting factor now, even for me and im only using a 900p monitor due to "life" reasons.

I hope I was able to help you at least a bit.

Thanks for your answer! I found it helpful to know that 2gb does actually limit you even on a 900p screen. Thanks!

yeah i have to say being a 3 year old card (well technically 4 if you look at it like an upgraded 680) it didn't age too well :\ I'm really just waiting on the AMD equivalent of the 1070 as i'm combining the gpu upgrade with a freesync/gsync monitor purchase as well.

While you can buy the 770,then later sell your 7950 and 770 and get a better card

GTX 770 the is the better card, but the HD 7950 has more VRAM.

$50 for a GTX 770 is a good deal, I'd buy it, and sell one of the 2 cards, I'd probably buy and resell the 770, 2GB of VRAM isn't enough IMO.

If your 7950 can overclock to 1.1Ghz+ then the 770 is not a worthy upgrade/sidegrade unless you play games that bottleneck 7950 really hard like ProjectCars.

get the 770 if your going to be doing 1080p gaming. you will (usually) not need more than 2gb of vram for 1080p.
