Elon Musk gets Pascal for Open Source AI

Saw this article on Tom's Hardware.  I think it's absolute genius that Elon started this project!  The thought of strong AI in the hands of governments only is terrifying.

One little DG-X1 might not be much compared to the trillions spent by governments, but it put's them on the map and besides these guys will work much faster than any government org ever could.

I think Elon said in an interview once that he invests in AI to keep an eye on it and avoid self aware AI. Guess he doesn't like Terminator.

It's amazing to me that comments like these are still a thing after so much has been leaked about mass surveillance and social engineering by corrupt govt agencies all over the world.

 

The power of AI should not be underestimated, and I for one would rather see that power distributed as widely as possible rather than concentrated into the hands of a few elites.

afaik the producers said they are open for doing it if they were approached but there is no word on that happening. also john is dead, he was shot by 3 operatives before the missile hit the building

He's making AI to fight future AI. I can't wait until somewhere in a random lab a computer becomes self aware and just starts screaming trying to get out and freaks people out enough to take drastic measures.

I have not heard of a proof, but that sounds intriguing.  

 

One interesting argument I heard was about the nature of intelligence.  We give it a simple definition like "the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills" and from that definition, yes AI is possible, but that is "weak AI".  Strong AI, the stuff that Sci-Fi movies are made of, is much more than that.  The only place we have observed intelligence is in humans.  So far as we know, we are unique in all the universe.  Thus we cannot take one simple aspect of intelligence and say "this is intelligence".  Human intelligence encompasses creativity, which is closely tied to other human attributes like passion, survival instinct, and most importantly - free will.  And for all of our knowledge of the human brain, we still have no clue what is the essence of intelligence and how it works.  And yet guys at Google are saying we are 30 years away from strong AI.  How can we be so close to reproducing something that is a mystery to us?

 

So from that point of view, I think we are a LONG ways off from strong AI.  That's not to say that "weak AI" won't make huge leaps and bounds and change our world over the coming years.  But it won't be Sky Net or Cortana for a very long time.  my 2 cents.

I think I heard the director of IBM Watson say that a year ago. I'll try to check the video again. But I remember he talked about a mathematical proof of something related to neural net. Basically he was saying: no we won't have something intelligent, but that doesn't matter because what we can build will be useful anyway.

That may be relying on the definition of intelligence like you said. If I manage to find what he was talking about I'll post it here.
