How much is hyperthreading worth to you?

So to complete my rollout upgrade to my PC, all I have left is really the proc and board, and it's come down to a 3570K or a stock clocked 3770, maybe an unlocked if I manage to stretch my budget a little farther. Was originally setting aside a few bucks to grab Arma, but I think I'd rather put that off for the overall stronger PC. So is hyperthreading worth about a full game and probably a 212 Evo or not?

It isn't worth it to me at all as I don't do any hardcore workstation stuff, all I do is video encoding for livestreaming and play games and a 3570k can handle that easily.

If your doing editing get the i7 if not get a 8350

It depends on whether or not you need it.

Not that simple--simple home video editing does not warrant an i7.

No, I'm dead set against AMD for my proc right now.

It depends on whether or not you need it.

Well it's not a matter of needing it so much as "futureproofing". Yeah, I know, I know, not possible. But with the next gen octas coming out, I can forsee the eight threads becoming the norm because devs are too lazy to optimize for quads.

for me, its worth the premium you pay between an i5 and an i7. here in canada the i7 is typically 60-80 more than the i5 variant.

I noticed a 30% increase in video rendering speed with hyperthreading. that being said i dont render enough videos to need the i7. it just makes things more productive when I do.

In battlefield4 i noticed a 20% increase in FPS when switching the 4670K for a 4770K.

I look forward to  audio production in the near future so im hoping the hyperthreading will accelerate this as well, although i havent looked into what audio software is optimized for multiple threads

as far as the evo 212 is concerned, i would personally stay away from that particular cooler or any budget cooler. Pick up a noctua cooler and be done with it.

Why no AMD? It would be better suited than an i7 for future gaming utilization.

Hyperthreading doesn't really benefit games and they likely won't in the coming future.

HT cores are not the same as actual cores which is what games are actually taking more advantage of. The i7 won't really future proof any better than the i5.

I was not happy at all with my last AMD chip, and I do play some games that definitely benefit per clock more than anything else. The other thing is that the i7 would last me longer between upgrades, since I can see the core of this system lasting me the next 4-5 years, with maybe a single GPU change. Couple other things I don't like from AMD, but those are smaller quirks.

As much as I like AMD and the 8350, I dont like any of the motherboards for AM3+, they are outdated. I like all the features on the new haswell boards, thats probably the main reason I am personally leaning to the 4770k over the 8350.

Then get a 4670k. HT won't really do anything for gaming. Fewer oc'ed cores would be better than a 3770.

Whether it's worth hyperthreading or not is a bit iffy to me, depends on what you're doing, but considering also that the 3570K can overclock and the 3770 can't, I would have to say the i5 would be the better choice.

Well like I said it's possible that I can stretch for that K, but even on a sale that's a $100 CAD premium for hyperthreading.

I didnt mention, I will be using Adobe programs for editing and the HT will help me in that factor

Mm.  Well, I don't think it's worth stretching for, the benefits of it are for production and programs heavy on computation.  Games aren't, really.

I didn't say to get the 3770 but instead the 4670k. The 4670k doesn't use HT.

Yeah, really wasn't planning to go Haswell at all. Prices on this side of the border for new tech is always bullshit compared to what I can get for a two hour drive across the Peace bridge. I can get a better board and possibly better proc for the same price.

Ahh. Haswell has better quality motherboards in general compared to Ivy. You're better off with a cheap Haswell mobo over slightly more expensive Ivy.

Well I'm poking around now, and assuming I can still catch some of these Z77 clearance boards, we're talking UD5Hs and UD4 Thunderbolts for 150. That's only a low-mid range Z87 board.

Where are you shopping from? The G43 or G41 PC Mate should be much cheaper.

CanadaComputers or NCIX. And I'm trying to maintain legacy PCI.

how long ago was your last amd chip if your rocking a 540, I'd check out the 8320 because from what you seem to be doing (gaming) or even video editing, it would probably outperform the i5/i7 in more heavily threaded apps, and vishera oc's like a beast, I'd personally get a 3570k if I had any sort of a budget, between the 4670k 4770k and a 3770k

Why do you want PCI?

Believe it or not, I REVERTED back to the 540. I got the 4100 and it did so badly for gaming that I had to swap back, and gave the Bulldozer to my parents. So no, my last AMD wasn't an Athlon II or something.

And as to why I want to keep PCI is for my sound card. Yeah, inboard has gotten better over the ages but I do like the one I have.
