But it is the same chip. Wasn't the 960M a GTX 750 or 750Ti GPU?

Indeed. The 1060 might be closer to replacing the 980M than the 970M at that, with the 1050 replacing the 970M, the 1040M(X?) replacing the 960M, and the 950M getting sod all.

I wonder if NVidia will ever make bottom-end Pascal GPUs. Remember the infamous GT 610?

You do not price something based on how it performs. You price it based on the price of the predecessor...... In this case the 960M was a $200 GPU which was in $900 laptops and $1100-1200 laptops. That means people should expect no different.

LOL, in that case welcome to the real world. You price something based on the maximum amount of revenue it will generate based on demand, competitors and other factors. Nvidia and intel clearly don't give a fuck what they price things at because they are the only real choice.

Just depends on the model. You can always OC and overvolt it on Clevo's.

@AluminiumTech

I suppose you can call Nvidia and insist that they can't price things the way they will, but they're replacing the 970M with the 1060- not its numerical predecessor.

Pretty blessed. I'm amazed nvidia didn't try to rip people off. 1300 for EVOC 1060 is pretty reasonable. Pretty cheesed they don't offer 6820hk with 1060. Only in 1070 model.

I'm estimating 1.2K extreme minimum. Typically Clevos have one of the cheapest pricing for laptops, just look at one and you'll roughly know the market price.

Pretty much on point here. The ones currently on retailers are 1300 give or take. If you just get barebones from like RJtech 1200 min sounds about right.

I can't find anything below $1500. Barebones laptops aren't quite applicable to this situation.

It seems that the initial image I posted was fake (A 6300HQ with a 1060 would create a horrible bottleneck), but the pricing reference of about $1500 was accurate. Laptops with GTX 1060s are going for that at the very minimum on Newegg, and around $1800 is where a lot of them stand.

Windows, source your own, use old ones, heaven forbid pirate a copy. And yes 30 day pixel guarantee. But you can always go through sales on HID. I swear sometime ago they offered discounts to NBR members exclusively but idk if that's still there. Honestly, if you're buying off the configurator then you might as well buy from retailers. The point of a barebones PC is so that you spec it out yourself. The options they offer you are dogshit cause they don't given any indication what they are. Doesn't tell you the timings. Are overpriced over market prices. etc. If you want a working laptop just go to MSI. Otherwise, there's really no point in buying barebones.

Consider that none of these laptops have anything less than a Core i7 6700HQ. If you're going to compare the other specifications to a 960M Laptop, consider that the GTX 960M is the same GPU as a GTX 750 Ti- GM107 with 640 CUDA cores enabled and similar clocks, and a 750 Ti is roughly $110. The recommended price for a Core i7 6700HQ over at ARK is about $380. All in all, we're getting substantially more than the sub-$1000 laptops with Core i5 6300HQs and 960Ms, and the price increase is proportionate.

True, we can be crabby that there won't be any successors in 960M laptop price ranges for a while, but consider what you get in terms of price to performance with the new 1060 laptops. Laptops with GTX 980s in them start at over $3000. We're going to get the same performance from a 1060 and a 6700HQ, but for half the price.

I'm all for it.

Why was anybody ok with this abusive pricing? $3000 for a 980 for notebooks? It better include an a top tier Xeon CPU with 32GB RAM and 3GB/s 1TB PCI-E SSD.
