Proof that a heavily overclocked 6600K will bottleneck a GTX 1070 or above

Watch the video from 3:20. Especially in CPU intensive games the 6600K will bottleneck a GTX 1070 and anything above. Even when heavily overclocked.

Well i can bottleneck my 9800GT with my overclocked 4690k in cities XL >_>

You can always find a scenario something derpy happens that usually doesn't happen if you look hard enough.

And btw i'm quite sure that's just the HDD failing to load in everything fast enough, i had similar issues when GTA V was still on my hdd.

Not in such dramatic form but i observed performance issues because the hdd couldn't keep up and when everything was finally loaded my cpu would die for 1-2 seconds until it got everything sorted out.

Also you can clearly see things are completely missing which is a clear sign there is a problem somewhere else.

Btw i moved it to my SSD, problem solved.

It happens across multiple games. We've had youtubers AND LTT users post about this multiple times but every time the benches get called "fake" or people blame ANYTHING else - RAM, HDD, PSU, Case (yes that actually happened)

1070 isn't intended for 1080p gaming.  You're taking a notoriusly CPU bound title and running it at the resolution most likely to become CPU bound on a GPU that is intended for 1440p / starter 4k / VR content.  Yes it's going to be CPU in the instance presented and likely quite noticeably; however, it's still very playable frame rates.

There's something cool here - you just can't see it.

This doesn't prove all that much. Ill just leave this here: https://support.rockstargames.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/203317428-gta-5-pc-fps-drops

All is goes to show is that GTAv is a pretty badly coded game from what I can see on t'internets, and frame drops happen for some reasons. Id be interested to see what this guys actual frequencies on his CPU are during game (not just % usage)

TLDR

yes an i5 can bottleneck a specific gpu under very specific scenarios, at 1080p. But chances are that it will not bottleneck 99% of the time.

When in doubt, re-format.

Strange. GTA V is being praised as being among the best optimized games thus far.

From what I see its great on the GPU, but since it is so CPU intensive (more so that just about any other popular game) that there probably isn't much they can do. I have found nothing but complaints online about stuttering for this title.

When in doubt, re-format.

Not really. Just as CPU-intensive as Novigrad (Witcher 3) or RotTR. It's just people bitching about their poor judgement.

I've personally never argued that an i5-6600K can never bottleneck a GTX 1070/1080. What I've argued is that when an i5 is bottlenecking a GTX 1070/1080, the equivalent i7 at the same clock speed usually isn't doing much better. Of course we can come up with plenty of scenarios with where an i5-6600K—or indeed, any CPU available for purchase today—is the bottleneck, that's not difficult.

There's also the question of what framerate you have to reach before the bottleneck shifts to the i5-6600K. If you need to run GTA V at 90 FPS before you hit the i5's limits, that doesn't seem like a gigantic problem for most people. Certainly not to a degree that justifies $100 more for an i7, which may or may not even do much better.

Well the fact that there is clearly stuff completely missing from the map means there is something else going on.

I have never seen just complete holes in the map when i was flying, ever.

Even when it was still on my HDD. And i have overall a slower rig.

Not hating, just pointing out that i5s DO have limits. They are not capable of handling ALL GPUs - just most.

the thing is that the CPU will not be the bottleneck at 4k. This is specifically talking about 1080p.

When in doubt, re-format.

Does not mean that people should not pair them with such GPU's I for one plan to get the 490 at some point next year when my cash flow has improved considerably.  But the i5 will remain till I can get the a solid i7 for a reasonable price.  And have a customer for a i5 system which I'd build with my older parts.

The last video shows no difference accross CPUs, which I guess is to be expected once clocked to the same speed.

(Basically both setups have CPU and GPU maxed out 90% of the time).

Thing is, at 1080p, i5s bottleneck the 1070, 1080, Fury X, Titan X/P and 980 Ti. There is NO way around it.

What? 90% is still bottlenecking and it does drop to 80% sometimes.

But if you're playing at 1080p and you have a 1070 it still doesn't matter at all. OH NO! I'm only getting 140fps on DOOM, not 150! What ever shall I do?
