Haswell or Skylake?

Go to solution Solved by TrigrH,

Choice X:

CPU: i5 6400 + 212 evo

Mobo: Asrock Fatal1ty B150 Gaming K4/Hyper

RAM: 8gb 2133 Mhz DDR4

GPU: RX 480 devil

PSU: 600w Thermaltake

SSD: 120gb Adata drive

HDD: 500gb and 2TB WD Drives

Case: Fractal Define R4

I got two main choices. Feel free to add but here is what I got so far.

I am going to upgrade my system pretty soon and its more of a budget system at the moment, so just gonna upgrade to get better frames and nicer quality.

I play at 1080p usually but might step up to a 1440p

Current Rig:

CPU: AMD 4300 @ 3.8Ghz

Mobo: MSI 760gm-p34

RAM: 8gb 1333 Mhz DDR3

GPU: GTX 750ti

PSU: 600w Thermaltake (I know its terrible im dumb :P)

HDD: 500gb and 2TB WD Drives

Case: Fractal Define R4

Choice 1:

CPU: i5 6500

Mobo: Gigabyte H110m Motherboard

RAM: 8gb 2133 Mhz DDR4

GPU: GTX 1060

PSU: 600w Thermaltake

SSD: 120gb Adata drive

HDD: 500gb and 2TB WD Drives

Case: Fractal Define R4

Price: $980

Choice 2:

CPU: i5 4690k *I already have a 212 evo*

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z97 Motherboard

RAM: 8gb 1333 Mhz DDR3

GPU: GTX 970

PSU: 600w Thermaltake

HDD: 500gb and 2TB WD Drives

Case: Fractal Define R4

Price: 1,000

There are benefits to both.

Choice 1:

-6GB of VRAM

-Faster memory

-Newer chipset

Choice 2:

-Can upgrade to SLI later

-Overclockable CPU

-Motherboard that can support more than 1 GPU

-Better CPU clock speed

-Supports quad channel RAM

Tough one. I'd personally opt for option 2 becuase the pros outweigh the pros of option 1. I think you should get another 8GB stick of RAM to add to the build.

That adds about an extra $50. Perhaps if I can find a sale or something, in consideration.

In all honesty though, I really like the build (option 2). I only say add another stick of similar RAM because it just adds that little bit of future-proof-ness; otherwise I can't fault it.

Build 1 because it's Skylake and offers an upgrade path. Also, you should change the 600W pos that is that thermal take PSU. Get something from XFX (except XT), Seasonic or from EVGA's GS/GQ/G2 lineups.

What does the Asrock board add to help with performance? Not shutting down just curious.

Alright, its only a like 3 bucks more than Choice 2 and if it can overclock and such that would be wonderful.

It doesn't support quad channel RAM. That's a CPU thing. It overclocks via the BCLK which can get to 165 before dying iirc. Also, you can get an i5-6400 (cheaper than the 6500) and overclock it further than a 6600 if you're lucky.

I am just upgrading my current tower and I am in CAD currency. Definitley going to use this list to my advantage.

Sounds pretty good to me. I do editing in Sony Vegas so if I can even get a small kick out of the overclock for rendering that is fine by me.

Could get a cheaper mobo, 8GBs of RAM and a G2 instead of a P2 PSU and using the money saved you could get a nicer graphics card like the Red Devil 480 or Nitro 480 instead of reference.

yes, you are able to overclock via base clock only, not via the multiplier.

Did not know that, thanks for the info.
