You guys think it is a bad idea to use old hardware as wall art? I have a OLD server (Dual Pentium 3's and 1.75Gb of DDR1, SCSI HDD interface making it nearly impossible to find drives for). Its not the most efficient thing and the fan is screwed up so it rattles alot when in use. I think it would look ok on a wall. Just wanted your thoughts

There's a super high end audio shop near me that actually has some wall art made with old hardware. There is some server hardware, and I think there's also a laptop motherboard. They also took apart a hard drive and used the read/write heads, as well as the platter. It's pretty darn spiffy looking. They mounted it on (I think) half inch plate glass, which wouldn't have been cheap, but it really does look awesome!

In my opinion, only certain components would look good hanging from a wall. CPUs (especially old ones with the pins still on the chip), HDDs (maybe), but things like motherboards would just seem out of place.

Now if you got a nice looking shelf, then things would fit a little better. You could stand a GPU up on it, arrange a bunch of hard drives.

Of course, if you covered the entire wall with motherboards, then it would look amazing, but it's really all or nothing for me.

Yeah you can do some pretty neat things with pcbs after you remove the caps and such. I used to glue them into patterns on cardboard and hang them in my room.

I am a paid professional, but only when I am at work...and getting paid.

Well since it is a rack mount server I could just take some L brackets and put them on the wall to mount it, along with some other way to secure it

I disagree with the motherboard point, but that's also highly dependent on the actual motherboard. I think that the older motherboards, where there are fewer components, tend to look more interesting, because you can kind of fool yourself into thinking that you can kind of understand what's going on. Plus, it's cool to see the translucent solder mask on old boards. I don't think that any modern boards would be too interesting though.

That might look nice. I suppose what I'm trying to say is that having a motherboard by itself might not look too sleek, but if it had some sort of frame, then things are improving.

I'd definitely want to see a picture if you do it.

I like the complexity of the board, and at least it's not an ugly old brown/beige color. That could look pretty cool if you've got a good spot for it.

See Im not sure if i want to take out the board though. I kinda want to keep it original. It might not be a bad idea to take everything out and do like anatomy of a server
