NVidia Limits Linux to Three Monitors

what gpu do u  have which lets u setup 5 monitors?

There are some editions of 'normal' GPus with more HDMI ports, something like 4 HDMI output and 2 DVI outpout. ASUS had a card like that for the 6950, I'm sure there are many others.

(+ there's SLI/CF)

So I see people talking about 5 monitors and such. I thought it was common knowledge if you wanted more then 4 monitors running, your only option was AMD? So your loosing 1 single monitor, and it might have been a goof. Gah, the Nvidia bashing is getting unbearable lately.

first the origin payoff now this

EA = Nvidia :/

I'd wait on calling payoffs facts. That article you read is full of crap, as far as I can tell, and so is the author. *That isn't fanboyism talking either, thats an honest assessment of it.

Well again, it just seems like the wrong thing to limit. More advanced users will be using more than three screens, and most of the people using Linux are also most of the people that will be using more than three displays as well.

And I agree, there isn't much to Linux currently that will need more than three displays, but why limit it in the first place? It just doesn't make any sense.

As it stands, Linux with more than 3 displays seems overkill for many, but I agree that it shouldn't be limited, either. Especially if support IS there from older drivers.

Nvidia has gotten so arrogant to the point that they must be so daft to believe that the consumer will still buy their product because of that extra 5-20% performance over their rival. When you deliberately cap something, you lose any advantage you think you had and are just giving your competitor business.

Huh, I don't have a close button up there. I clicked up there, and something happened, but it didn't close. Now I am full screen! What did you make me do!

Make you more exposed to the nvidia hate.

No, it's an old standard. If you are using a VGA cable, it can be exposed to interference since it is analogue.

Newer standards like DVI, HDMI can carry audio signals as well. It's not bad to use VGA, but it isn't recommended.

Give it time, I'm sure they will fix it.

Most people use one monitor anyways. the people that use multi monitors use 3, 4 is a rarity. so it sucks for the 1% of users.

The problem is, no one seems to ever think it might be an accident. We had an old saying, shit happens. Then you get shot. But the first part, shit happens. I remember a game or two where an update took out features. There was bashing, and then they came out and said it was a bug, what we changed effected something that we didn't expect.

Just like the Origin story, everyone jumped on the Nvidia hate wagon, without looking indepth at the article, and the crud in it.

Most of the people will probably be unaffected by it :P (but still ,silly of nvidia to limit it)

I'm personally using 2 24" screens and a 46" tv and i don't see me getting another screen anytime soon tbh :P

why isn't it recommended ? can i turn vga in to hdmi ?

You can with a 60 € converter.

Why it isn't recommended, well worse image quality , static in the image depending on what the cable quality is like because its analogue.

Does anyone know the reason for this? I mean, Nvidia wouldn't gain anything by making people switch to Windows over GNU/Linux. Maybe a licensing issue for HDCP/HDMI/something like that?

It just doesn't make any sense for them to remove features from their own products. I am skeptical to the claim that it's to drive people to Windows. The whole thing seems really weird to me.

Can anyone come up with a good reason why they would do this?

it must be some linux issue itself. not Nvidia

You couldn't even HAVE more than two monitors attached to an nVidia card until the GTX 600 series came out. If you wanted more than two screens at any one time you were forced into investing in an SLI setup (or go with a single AMD card that could drive as many monitors as it had outputs).

In my opinion it isn't that much of a limitation... There aren't too many people who use more than 3 and usually the people that do are professionals and need software that Linux doesn't even have at the current time
