I've never owned a computer with a discrete graphics card, but was able to upgrade my rig to a Haswell i7 and SSD last summer. A graphics card is all I need to start PC gaming.

I have a Sapphire R9 270X Dual-X 2GB edition which is smokin hot. I mean literally, I have to keep it at 90% fan speed to keep it from reaching 90 degrees. A polaris would literally be a game changer for me and my PC.
