so my cpu has been getting up to 80c in rise of the tomb raider, using the coolermaster hyper D92 cooler is this too hot for this cooler or is it normal? im using stock clocks with voltage set manually to 1.24

All cpus are different. Yours if Fine, but a litter hotter than others. I wouldn't worry though. The time to start worrying is above 85C

That seems really got for just gaming at stock voltage, not dangerous though. But I imagine with that cooler even heavy gaming would have it sitting around high 60's. Stock cooler should be the one hitting 80c around full loads.

It shouldn't be much of a problem but make sure you applied the thermal paste right.

Is that too hot?  No, it's safe.  But, it's a lot hotter than I think it probably should be.  I wonder why it isn't cooling better than that...

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

It's a technically "safe" temperature, but it's a lot more than I'd expect at stock settings, a relatively low manual voltage, and in such a GPU-heavy game. If it were me, I'd double-check that the cooler was installed correctly and there wasn't something drastically hurting airflow inside the case.

Individual CPUs vary a lot in what voltages and clock frequencies they'll tolerate, but since basically the same amount of power is flowing through the chip I don't think the silicon lottery accounts for there being big variances in temperatures at stock settings.

The cooler should come with halfway decent paste. You could always get better but I don't think paste is the problem so much as installation probably was.

I use arctic silver 5. It's not the very best but it lasts for years. I have seen many different thermal pastes decompose over years of use. Those are not high temps but for an after market  92mm cooler, those are pretty high. The CPU's can easily go into the 90's under heavy load without much of a problem. I would think that those temps with the coolermaster cooler would be under heavy load with significant voltage increase and a decent OC. You should probably re paste the CPU.

im thinking it might be due to low airflow too as i have no intake fans close to my cpu cooler not sure though ive just always been very iffy on applying paste myself never really done it before

Try leaving the side panel off the case and monitor temps

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

yea lowers temps by 8c-10c altho it doesnt change my gpu temp, but if that is the case i have done all i can for airflow with my current corsair 200r case

Yeah it won't hurt to just leave it off t o improve temps

hmm id rather not to avoid dust as theres quite a bit of it in my room, and before you say that it could be dust i have already cleaned out the cpu heatsink and my fans

What is the cpu load when you get those temps? Download Realbench from asus, and run the stress test for an hour. Check the temp on the cpu atleast every 10 min. If it doesnt get above 80C in that test(the test will load the cpu 100% for a whole hour), you are fine. If you get closer to 90C, you should buy a new cooling solution.

ive done those doesn't get above 80c and its at 100% load in rise of the tomb raider which is only game that it does it

80C at 100% load is nothing to be scared of. But if the cpu is at 100% all the time, its bottlenecking your system. Sadly, with the processor evolving the last years, even a 6700K will bottleneck a 1080 sometimes. I have the same setup ;)

As long as the gpu doesnt dip below 100% work rate while the cpu is at 100%, its ok. But i bet there are some stutter involved if that is the case.

Well then you are good. Its a little scary doe, that the 6700K is at 100% work in a one year old game. For all of us 6700K owners, that means the 6700K will be a bottleneck in near future games :/

Its not worth upgrading from a 6700K to a 6-10 core. But more and more games utilizes multicores, so i think we will see a performance boost on multicore processors in the future. But there arent enough games that benefit significantly from it yet, so as of now a 6700K is the best option for those with a limit to their wallet.

But the next time you are gonna upgrade your rig, taking a look at multicore processors is not a bad idea.
