780 TI upgrade RX 480

Go to solution Solved by nicolas_cote,

Found me a GTX 980, going to put a hefty overclock on it and see, and the 1gb extra vram should help. got it for really cheap too. all in all the upgrade cost  me 20$!  Used parts for the win!

I've got a 780 ti which I bought used a while ago and has served me well untill now. I recently got a 3rd monitor and am now playing with a 3x 1080p setup. The 3gb vram is an issue in some games with the 780ti. I was thinking the RX 480 might be a good upgrade / sidegrade as i could change for an RX 480 for about 40$.

I've checked out some 390 and 390x cards as well but they're still quite expensive on the used market. Same goes for the Nvidia cards.

So, keep the 780ti or get the 480, that is my dilemma.

5760 x 1080 will not be playable with the RX 480, if you wish to play with 3 x 1080p screens. For that I would rather go with the 1070 or even 1080.

But if you want to play with a single 1080p screen, then the RX 480 will be perfect, but wait for the 1060 to be released, it might be a surprise.

Sidegrade is right, but the 780ti will be harder to sell on the used market if you do decide you want to upgrade again soon. I would probably go for it.

Like humbug said, for 40 I'd do it just to have it.

Bleigh!  Ever hear of AC series?

40$ as in, sell the 780ti for about 300$ and spend an extra 40$ to get the 480

According to leaked Nvidia reviewer's guides, the 1060 outperforms the RX480 in every scenario (that Nvidia listed, hint hint bias?) - it might be worth taking a peek at, especially because the embargo lifts on the 19th, and it's likely Linus will have a video on it. If you can afford to wait basically a week, I'd do so.

The 780ti beats the RX 480 in Ashes of the Singularity the game AMD does best, you'd be getting a downgrade.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Sell it and spend a bit extra to get a GTX 980 Ti that has the liquid cooling loop. OC it and you will be able to drive your monitors nicely.

I just ran Firestrike with the stock specs on the 980 and got +100 points than what i was getting with the 780ti. The 980s seem to be good overclockers too so i cant wait to see what i can get!

780Ti is surpassed by a GTX 970 already, which is surpassed by RX 480, R9 390 and an R9 290X. Not to mention 3GB of VRAM on the 780Ti
