Helping my friend with his new PC

It's completely new. He has none of the parts so far.

-Make the switch to Skylake. A i5 6600K with a Z170 motherboard and DDR4 RAM shouldn't cost much more.

-Getting a GTX 970 for that price now is a waste of money with the RX 480 now available. Either wait for the AIB models (Sapphire Nitro, MSI Gaming X etc.) or wait for the GTX 1060.

-Better quality PSU is a must, you do not want to cheap out on a PSU that will be running the whole system. Get a grey Corsair CX or any Seasonic or XFX unit (with the exception of the XFX XT series).

Hello peeps,

I was helping my friend with his PC build, but I'm not really a specialist, so I was wondering if you guys could look at it for me/him. Here's his PCPartPicker link. He was particularly unsure about his monitors being able to work with his graphics card. I was pretty sure they would work, but not completely sure, so that's probably the main focus for his build.

Thanks.

Why DDR3 based ?

Leave DDR3 alone, buy a DDR4 system.

Did your friend has this PC or will you buy them ? Which parts will you buy as a new ?

Is this a completely new build? Are you using any parts that you've already purchased?

So, he wanted me to post this in response to your suggestions, but I guess he skipped over the DDR4 part lol.

you don't need skylake, the new x99 chips are based on Haswell. plus Skylake is super overpriced.

ASUS Z170-E + DDR4 RAM will save him some money. Otherwise, good.

i5 4690K - $237

i5 6600K - $238

DDR4 RAM costs the same. You can pick up a Z170 motherboard for the same price as that Z97 PC MATE.

Ooh, your buddy downgraded on the PSU. The NEX series are known to have crap voltage regulation (which can put unnecessary stress on the VRMs of both your motherboard and GPU). Stick with the previous Corsair RMx or go for one of EVGA's GS, G2, B2, or P2 PSUs instead.
