Questions about Ultrawide monitors and games

lkarej

So I have the chance of getting an ultrawide monitor for relatively cheap.

I was thinking of picking it up but first I have to clear up a few issues, maybe only 1 actually.

So do games have to have a 21:9 option to properly scale? Or is there a way to set a custom res so it will work properly with such an oddly shaped monitor?

I heard you can set custom resolutions in AMD/Nvidia control panel(s) (respectively) and was wondering if doing something like that would make/help games work properly in 21:9

Main reason this is very, very important is that I use my PC almost 100% for games and I don't want to buy a monitor that won't be compatible with that. Would be p stupid to buy a monitor I can't use for primary PC usage.

That's it for now, any help would be appreciated!

I make bad life decisions.

Annoying answer: It depends on the game. Some games have options for ultrawide support (newer AAA games, for example) and scale perfectly, while others don't scale at all. Many will work with custom resolutions, but the UI will be buggy.

One thing I'm curious about in this same vein is whether you have to exclusively play a game or if it's possible have half the screen with a game and the other half with the normal desktop.  I currently have 2 monitors and most of the time I have skype, a movie, youtube, etc. open on one monitor while I'm working or playing something on the other.  I'd like to be able to keep that functionality while consolidating hardware if possible.
