Intel Core i5 3520M idle at 50C

Jonny
Go to solution Solved by ttam,

Also make sure to give the vents a good blow out every once and a while to clear any unwanted dust

Edit: Just checked out the link you posted. That's a pretty sweet looking laptop. I love that finish. Thin laptops often do have heat issues. Thankfully my S7 likes to idle at 30c

Is this good or is the thermal paste not right?

If it is the laptop you have in your signature i would say that it's normal, mine was idle at 65c on a crappy HP Pavilion (biggest piece of shit) xD

I have noticed that a lot of laptop manufactures like to add excessive and often cheap TP to aid in reducing a little bit of cost. I wouldn't worry about it unless you start to see excessively high temps under load.

If you have the know-how; Tear it down and clean it off with isopropyl alcohol and put on some new thermal paste. This should see about a 5c drop in temperatures and make it easier on you to use. This is something I do when I purchase a new laptop and it does help.

Laptops have subpar cooling, replacing the thermal plaste is unlike to lower it by more than 1-2 degree's. Around 50c is the average idle temp for a reasonably powerful mobile CPU.

It's about 5-10 degrees on the hotter side.

If @crunzaty is correct, you might just have a terrible cooling solution.

The chip should be totally fine though,

Quite hight in my opinion. As said, check the thermal paste and the cooling solution. That might help.

I got this laptop https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/form-view/ultraNote-15/UltraNote-IPS-500/

percentage on processor is around 3%

Seeing how thin that laptop is I'm amazed that the cooling solution is capable of idle temps of 50c, honestly I wouldn't mess with it but that's just me. I have a bit of a phobia about taking laptops apart.

My now dead HP Pavilion idled at 70c and a light game would put it 80-90c. I wonder what prime 95 temps would be xD
