Concept Artist looking for Laptop!!! (Razer Blade??? Any recommendation??)

Hi everyone,

I am a concept artist that use 3D( Modo, Zbrush, Maya......) and Photoshop daily for painting. I am currently looking for a new laptop that last 4~5 years, very good screen with 16gb of ram (For painting), good graphic cars( 3D and Games, hopefully can run battlefield 1 in the future) .

So I am looking at the Razer Blade 2016, But i also heard it has a lot of problem such as the heat problem. So do you guys think i should get the blade or theres something else better??

I used to use a MacBook Pro, so I am also open to Mac(Ofcause, i cant run games on it). Should i also wait too se if they will upgrade the macbook pro??

what would you do!!??? Thanks!!!!

PS, I will use this mostlu for PS and 3D, gaming is just a plus for me to game at my friends house.

Wait for the 15" retina update, if it has like a 1060 in it would be a great gaming machine too!

Also check out the GS40 Phantom from MSI, the Clevo/Sager P650SE (I think thats right) their slim machine, and the Asus G501

Yea. Make sure you get the 4k screen if your doing professional work. What's your budget? There's plenty of workstations or workstation like laptops that are good for your use.

Uhh, Mobility? Battery Life? These two are connected because if you need to be mobile you need more battery life, and if you dont mind tethered to a wall you don't need any. I'm assuming you're gonna use a drawing pad in additional to your new computer.

Thinner, Better Battery Life

P640Rx (14 inch 970m)

P650Rx (15 inch 980m)

Thicker, Socketed (USB C)

P750DM (15inch 980m)

Workstation Class

P50 (15inch M2000m)

Thanks for the reply again!

I dont mind the Battery life, I always have a plug when I work.

Mostly only care about a powerful GPU,CPU, at least 16 gb of ram, a good screen with nice colors, last long.  thats about it.

I was interested on the razer because the 970 and it looks cool. haha
But i am open to all kind of different of laptop, thats why its hard to pick one, because there are soooo many!!!!

4k uses more power and it is way to high res for a 15 inch laptop, you end up scaling in windows and then you loose that extra work space and it is not all programs that is very happy to scale so sometimes you end up with some weird shit. A lot of people with 27 inch 4k screens scale because text is too small, now just imagine a 15 inch. A nice 1080p IPS screen where you remove scaling in windows is much better.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

Feel free to pm me if you have a question for me or quote me. If you want to hear what I have to say about something just tag me.

Yeah you have to turn on windows scaling to 200% this making 4k pointless, and some programs fuck up completely when scaling, where some programs stay tiny, some go too large, some web content looks shit too as they were not designed to be viewed in that way

plus 4k is pointless for gaming, takes up more battery etc

i mean look at it this way

15" 1080p = 147 pixels per inch

30" 4k = 147 pixels per inch

Desktop - Corsair 300r i7 4770k H100i MSI 780ti 16GB Vengeance Pro 2400mhz Crucial MX100 512gb Samsung Evo 250gb 2 TB WD Green, AOC Q2770PQU 1440p 27" monitor Laptop Clevo W110er - 11.6" 768p, i5 3230m, 650m GT 2gb, OCZ vertex 4 256gb,  4gb ram, Server: Fractal Define Mini, MSI Z78-G43, Intel G3220, 8GB Corsair Vengeance, 4x 3tb WD Reds in Raid 10, Phone Oppo Reno 10x 256gb , Camera Sony A7iii

Yep IPS is the right thing to look for (or sometimes PLS or VA which are similar alternatives)

notebookcheck is a great resource, read their reviews they cover thermals, colour accuracy, CPU and GPU performance, and build quality

which is why i told him he needs to go 4k. Not alot of 1080p screens have good sRGB and aRGB coverage. If he needs color accuracy, most 1080p screens would not be great. Take the example of the XPS1080p vs 4k. You would most definitely want the 4k for the high aRBG1988 coverage for professional use. Of course this isn't all the case. I definitely would not need 4k myself, but perhaps as a concept artist, the tradeoff between scaling and battery would be required for color accuracy and coverage.
