The "Gene" are the micro-ATX motherboards.

The "Hero" is a *cut-down* feature version of the iconic "Formula" variant.

Extreme -- Best-of-the-best of the ROG line-up; E-ATX form factory (typically)

Formula -- Basically the "Extreme" but in a ATX form factor

Hero / Ranger -- Less feature rich version of the "Formula"; ATX form factor

Gene -- micro-ATX form factor

Impact -- mini-ITX form factor

Well not fully true.

The Formula is not even close to what the Extreme is for that matter. :)

The Hero is indeed a cut down version of the formula thats correct.

It basicly has less feutures in terms of connectivity.

The Hero and the Formula basicly have the same vrm implementation.

But the Extreme is a bit diffrent.

I had assumed so, but couldn't confirm -- the ROG Extreme boards are 2extreme4m3 ($$$).

The thought the Formula boards had a slightly better VRM system....

...Oh never mind...just compared the Maximus VII Hero (since I own one) to the VII Formula...both 8+2 configuration.

Well, the VII Formula is compatible with water-cooling out of the box.

Yeah the Maximus 8 Extreme is indeed a bit expensive.

But the same can be said about the Formula.

The main diffrence between the maximus 8 formula and extreme is the amount of true powerphases for cpu vcore.

Both boards use an all digitally controled vrm implementation from IR.

But in case of the formula and the Hero also, they used a single IR35201 8+0 flex mode pwm, which can either run in 8+0 or 6+2 mode.

In case of the Formula and Hero the configuration runs in 6+2 mode.

They took 4 true phases and doubled them 8 pwm phases for cpu vcore (vcc), and the additional +2 phases are dedicated to the igpu (vccGT)

That makes it look that those boards have an 8+2 phase design, but dont let yourself trick you because there are no 8+2 phase or 10 phase pwm´s used on motherboards today.

There has been a 10 phase pwm from Voltera in the past, the VT1165 / 1185, used on some X58 boards, but those cannot be used today, since they are not vrd12 certified.

In case of the Maximus 8 Extreme, they use the same IR35201 flex mode pwm, but on this particular board, they used 2 of them.

The first pwm runs in 8+0 phase mode, and provides 8 true phases for cpu vcore (vcc)

And the second pwm, provides 4 phases for igpu (vccGT).

There is no phase doubling going on at the Maximus 8 Extreme, thats the main diffrence.

Thats why those boards are that expensive, because they have 8 true phases for cpu vcore, which technically should be better for overclocking etc.

8 true powerphases for cpu vcore simply means that they have to use 2 pwm´s, and that adds to the costs allot. ;)

That is also one of the reasons why you dont see that manny true 8 phase for cpu vcore boards on Z170.

Only the realy higherend ones, like the Maximus 8 extreme, Asus Z170 WS, Asus Z170 Deluxe, and Gigabyte top end ones, and the EVGA Z170 Classified.

This all has to do with the amount of output rails you need for Z170. :)

Impact -- mini-ITX form factor

Pretty much, I'll add some extra just because I want to lol

The Gene is often overlooked, it has a lot of the same build quality that the Extreme gets.  It also receives the same amount of extreme overclocking support that the Extreme gets, which is really nice. (Things like LN2 settings, lots of BIOS revisions for more support etc)

The Impact is basically an ITX version of the Extreme.  It EXCELS at RAM overclocking like mad, it's better than the Extreme AND the Gene for RAM overclocking. It has insane VRM for a mini-itx board as well, it can handle 6700k's at 1.9v at -196c 6.5+ ghz no problem.  The thing is a dam tank really. It's amazing how many things that little board can do, considering it's tiny as hell!

I wouldn't really call the Formula similar to the Extreme, TO ME it seems like it's really targeted more towards watercooling and fancy pretty builds.  When I think Extreme, I think people with 4 way SLI or Crossfire systems, or LN2 die-hard stuff & stupid features 99% of people won't use lol.
