One 1080 vs Two 1070's in SLI

RadicalAns

So I'm planning a build for later this year and I'm debating on whether to go for one 1080 or two 1070's in SLI. Originally I was thinking two 1080's but my PSU is only 750W and I don't know if it could take that. Anyway, does SLI bring enough of a performance boost that it's worth going 1070 or will I just be better off w/ one 1080 and calling it a day.

only difference between 1070 and 1080 is Vram and they both probably use the same power.

Nah, two GTX 1080s will easily run on a 750W PSU provided if it's good quality.

You're better off going with a single GPU since the issues associated with SLI may give you an unpleasant experience (improper utilisation, microstuttering etc.).

Do you really need two 1080s?

Probably not, but it'd be nice for future-proofing. Last system I built was 2009, so I tend to try and go long w/ a system.

I would definitely go with a 1080 and then buy another one later if you feel like you really need it. Your psu should be fine for the 1080, they dont really consume alot of power.

Have you even looked at the specs of them? the 1080 has way more power than the 1070.

So you can afford 2x 1080's, but cant upgrade to like a 900w+ PSU?

I doubt youll need more than 1 1080. Buy 1 now, and when you actually need it add another, plus it will be much cheaper by then. Use that money saved to upgrade the PSU.

Yeah I was checking the power on eXtreme Power Supply Calculator and 1070's used way less.

SLI can be hit and miss in terms of gains, I would suggest going with 1 1080

How are you so sure? It is not. Look at the specs, then speak.

A fair point. I'd rather not cause I just bought the 750 to replace a dying PSU and I'd like to reuse it if possible.

Well, you are doing the same thing right now with the GPU. Buy the best once instead of rebuying cheap stuff.

750 watts are enough for two 1080s, but the quality of the psu is more important? Which unit do you have?

What is there to look at? If the developer codes for it then the gains will be huge, if they don't you may as well remove the card all together. I know this from personal experience + watching listening to other people.

750w is enough for 2 1080s, even 650w would be enough. What PSU do you have? 2 980Tis can run off a 650w PSU and they use more power.

750W is more than enough

dont pay attention to stupid power supply calculators

and i highly doubt you need two 1080s

one is more than enough

A 750W can handle 2x1080 without any problem.

A 980 3 way SLI consumes around 600W on full load. Proof here: http://goo.gl/f8zzmf

That'll do just fine. Don't worry. What monitor do you have? How many?

Well, if you look at the specs page, the numbers in 1080 are greater than 1070. That one thing is enough that 1080 is powerful than a 1070.

Right now just one 1920x1200 Gateway monitor I bought w/ my system back in 2009. After seeing the responses here I may actually go w/ one 1080 and then upgrade the monitor to something a bit newer.

Well if you are going to get 4K monitor, you might need 2x GTX 1080 to get high FPS at all times xD

But if you are going for 1440p or 1600p, one will do just fine. Buy GTX 1080 for now, and later if you realy need it, buy another when prices will also drop :)

Like you should buy 2 3x1440p monitor to use that full power of 1080x2.

Dude, I game on a 3440x1440 monitor with a 1080 and it is overkill for most games. I use DSR 1.5x just to challenge it.
