Hi all,

Looking at building a gaming PC for my girlfriends brother. Basically i want it to be future proof enough to last a few years. It will be for less demanding titles but i still want it to have enough grunt to handle a high end graphics card if he switches to PC full time. So i'm looking at either an older higher end cpu or a newer budget one. I would like newer because of things like pci 3.0 and whatnot.

Thanks in advance

On a budget AMD is gonna treat you the best, even then I choose to be ignorant enough to always recommend Intel. I just feel better with the blue team powering my PC's. I'm sure an AMD nut will poke his head in here soon and recommend you the best CPU for your girlfriends brother though. :)

Quad but it's outdated, 45nm 1156 socket. It's a dead end and would be a waste of money.

Why not?

Outdated, 45nm 1156 socket. It's a dead end and would be a waste of money as you would only be able to upgrade to an 1156 socket i7 which is a lot slower than sandy/ivy/haswell i7's.

What does it have over the fx 4300 though?

Two extra cores, best one for around a $100 CPU budget is the FX-6300.

Like @ said, two more cores and it's only like $10 more. You can also find the 6300 for the same price if there is a sale

don't listen to the dudes saying FX 6350, if you have no budget, best way to go is i5 2500

I would go with FX 8350.

You can find an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 for under 30usd on eBay if you really go budget haha.

A Celeron G555 is faster and you could upgrade to an i5/i7 later, getting a core duo/quad at this point would be a waste.

An E8400 on a P45 or X48 mobo overclocked to 4.5GHz is still good for gaming, he could drop in a Core 2 Quad and overclock to 4.5GHz and it would be as good as a 3570K
