A 550 won't be enough?

The RX480 each have a single 8 pin.

A single 8 pin has a maximum of 150W

Plus the 75W from the mobo, the cards are drawing 225 W each.

That's 450W for just the cards.

For the rest of the system, ehh, 200-250W.

You will need a 750/60 atleast to have some comfort margin

So, my 970 g1 draws 300 watts because it has an 8 pin connector(150w), a 6 pin(75w) and the pci-e connector(75w) ?

no. the reference one got a 6pin which has a max specification of 75W + 75W from the mobo giving it 150W for the reference one.

aftermaket ones are rumored to be 200W meaning with a 6700k he will need at least 600W

What will be the ideal psu for 2 crossfired RX480s?

650W will be enough with overclocking.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

i would still go 600W at least. the power difference without hyper threading isnt that high. you also need to know that the overall power draw of the chipset is way higher than the psu tdp. pcpartpicker does that very well! but they dont factor in overclocking which actually does a lot to the power draw.

That's funny, because I only use 314 watts/Whole system) under FULL load, gpu totally pegged at 100. Having an 8 pin connector does not mean that it will use 150 watts, it is just capable of using 150 watts

it means that it can draw up to 300W if you were to do extreme overclocking!

also the reference rx480 is already rated by amd to have a power consumption of 150W!

PSUs are performing at peak efficiency at about 50% load so I'd say go with a 600W to 700W PSU.

Yeah the RX 480 can draw 75W over the PCIe slot and an additional 75W from the six-pin cable. That's <300W for the GPUs and another <100W maybe from the system depending on components. Thypical or average usage will be probably around 300W for the whole system (CPU won't be at 100% most likely) while gaming. Those are very rough estimates but 650W will work just fine for sure.

Although with that being said going slightly overkill isn't really a big deal with a PSU, the worst that can happen is you pay more money for it. The efficiency is what determines how much power is wasted, converted to heat.

A single more powerful GPU is always better...you should never buy 2 mid-range cards if you have the budget for one higher-end instead.

But the problem is that R9 490X will be coming in October, the 1070 costs less but performs worse than xfire 480s and the 1080 costs more yet the 480s performs a bit better.

Yeah in the games that have a good support for crossfire it will work great indeed.

But there are also games that will be a pain in the ass.

I suppose thats mainly what @i_build_nanosuits is pointing at.

8pin means 225W max.

150W from the PSU directly through the 8pin and 75W from the PCIe slot.

Yes indeed...AMD showed dual RX 480 being slightly faster in Ashes of the singularity...a game notoriously known to greatly favor AMD and also offer excellent crossifre support...not the case for MANY other AAA titles for which dual GPU support is often left out all togheter by game developers and in which case you will end up playing the games on a single card...having the second card doing nothing.

And many other games will have support for dual GPU setups but will exibit all kind of compatibility and performance scalling issues...in which case yet again you might end up reverting to playing the games on a single GPU.

There is also the power consumption and heat output...noise levels...airflow...higher end more expensive powersupply required etc.

Ashes of the singularity is simply a ''best case scenario'' for dual AMD GPU setup vs GTX 1070/1080 or whatever...that's why AMD specificaly pick this test to show the world how good value a RX480 CFX setup might be...in a BEST CASE scenario...not OVERALL.

All in all...IMHO, MOST of the time a single GTX 1070 is a MUCH better choice and will end-up performing better and more consistently with better minimum FPS and frametime variances and just overall a much smoother much more enjoyable gaming experience...i know i would pick a single GTX 1070 any day of the week over even dual RX 480X or whatever.
