Gaming on 4k TV

I was looking for a new monitor to upgrade from my x3 1080p 24"ers , but to my surprise 4k and 1440p monitors are still super expensive. After looking around on amazon, for the same price as one of

these monitors I CAN GET A 50" 120HZ 4K TV for around $500. To my understanding this tv wouldnt screentear until i surpass 120fps correct? Is there any downside to using a tv as a monitor other than pure size? 

(Will be using for gaming with a gtx 1080)

Really nope, exept the response time. Normal TV's have ~10ms response times , while the monitor's ~4ms (Newer ones).

just make sure to disable all image correction and enchantment options on the TV otherwise you'll get terrible input latency

My 4k TV said 120hz and it was... when set to 1080 mode. Becareful,  if you see a lot of lag, it'll probably be for this reason.

tvs make really bad monitors! even 4k ones! they just look garbage! ask yourself why a tv is cheaper than a monitor...

 

secondly almost all 4k tvs ive seen only have hdmi 1.4 so youre limited to 30fps at 4k

 

oh and the 120hz thing isnt the same as pc hz, its back light strobing. it will be in every way a 60hz display
