Broadwell-E Or Wait?

  1. 1. What do you think?

    • I'm getting Broadwell-E

    • I'm planning to get Zen.
      2
    • I'm planning to get Skylake-E.

    • I'm waiting to see if Zen spurs competition again. (AKA I'm just hoping things get better.)

    • I don't think we're going to get good CPUs for a while.

I'll preface this by saying I'm not asking for advice, I know what I'm doing. I just want to know what you guys are doing too.

Anyway...

I was planning on finally switching to the enthusiast platform with the release of Broadwell-E, and now that it's here I am beyond disappointed. They made only the most minor performance improvements and bumped up the price, so it's like they didn't even come out with a new generation -Just ever so slightly faster chips at higher prices. The only really different product is the 10-core, which is not priced to replace the previous Extreme Edition, but rather to be a step above it. Or two. Or a dozen.

(Seriously, a ~75% price increase for two cores?!)

I'm hoping Zen is good, or at the very least puts pressure on Intel to stop being stagnant.

Honestly I was going to pickup either a 6850K or 6900K but if the first batch is anything to go by for overclock potential it's even worse than the 58/59 series they were supposed to replace. So it's down to I can spend more for a chip that can OC less or spend less for a 5930K and OC more and get more out of it. I'll be missing pretty much nothing and getting better performance. I'm still going to give it about a month and see if better iterations of chips show up on the market but if nothing shows up better by July then I'm just picking up a 5930K.

To be fair, I don't know why people were expecting such a huge jump from Haswell-E to Broadwell-E.

Consumer Broadwell wasn't even a jump in performance from Haswell, so I dunno.

I'm assuming that Zen is gonna be on par with Haswell and slightly below Skylake- that being said I'm waiting for Skylake-E or possibly Canon Lake (desktop, not enthusiast).

Buying GPU's or CPU's right now is a good way to end up with buyers remorse IMO.

The reasons are different, though. The new GPUs being launched are better than the last generation, but the CPU market is so stagnant right now they should all be packaged with mosquitoes.

Yeah, I'm hoping Skylake-E is good, but personally that's too far off for me to be making plans. I'm just waiting right now because Broadwell-E isn't even worth considering. (That is, unless you have exorbitant disposable income and want a Decacore that isn't a Xeon.)

Ram went up from 2133 to 2400 in Broadwell-E

I'm using Haswell-E, not going to get Broadwell-E for that minor improvement. Skylake-E on the other hand, that depends with my current platform whether it breaks down or not. If it still works, then I'll continue to use it for as long as I can, and probably skip 3 to 4 generations and then do a upgrade. My last system was a socket 775, it last about 7 years. It had a Xeon X3350, got the cpu for $350. So $350 / 2,555 days (7 years) comes out to $0.13 cents per day to run it.

Current cpu is Xeon E5 1650 v3, got it for $615, back in 2015. If I upgrade to Skylake-E, where they say it's in 2017, then for this cpu, $615 / 730 days (2 years), cost of this cpu comes out to $0.84 cents per day to run it. To get my money's worth on this Xeon, I would need to run it for like 11 years, which comes out to $0.15 cents per day. 11 years? Most likely impossible as motherboard would be dead by then and it's EOL. So 7 years, that's $0.24 cents per day. Not going to beat my old 775 xeon, but it's still my money's worth.

To get your cpu's money worth, then you'll need to use it for as long as possible. The less spent on it per day, the better it is.

You mean in the poll? If so, I don't think you understand the poll...

I do, but in price per performance, it works great. Obviously, this is about the new chips.

Since I'm still rocking Z68 and a Sandybridge i5 2500 and its still working fine, I guess I'll pass on upgrading for another few generations to come^^

I have yet to reach a point / resolution where my CPU bottles my GPU, until then I will not spent money on CPU + MoBo + RAM Upgrades :P
