What are some decent sub $100 AC routers? Go up to $120 if need be.

Elaborate keeping in mind I have no experience with access points.

TP-link archer c7 (getting wired to wireless access speeds of around 450 mbps which is pretty darn good). Using it right now. The C9 is extremely well reviewed (at the upper end of your budget), but lacks wall mounting, a key feature for me personally.

A router takes your public IP from your ISP, and creates your internal network. To hands out IP addresses, manages traffic, port forwarding, ect. If you already have a wireless router (I'm guessing with only 2.4G), you can keep that in place, and disable the WiFi on it (via the Web GUI) and then use an AC WiFi Access Point. At this point, your old router will manage the network, while your new AP will connect WiFi devices to the wired connection.

 

The sole duty on an access point is to convert a wired connection to WiFi. It has no routing functionality (as mentioned above), and in all likelyhood, has only one ethernet port.
