I upgrade when I actually need it.

Recently upgraded from 8GB of RAM to 16GB(haven't updated my signature yet), because I was running into a "low memory" issue when playing a certain game (Space Engineer.. that game eats up RAM like no tomorrow and really, 8GB was just not cutting it anymore)

 

CPUs last a LONG time these days and the few extra fps you'd gain with each new generation isn't worth it IMO, if I upgraded my CPU today, from what I can see of benchmarks online, I'd gain about 10~15fps, depending on the game. Personally, that's still not worth it, when you consider most games are GPU bound anyway.

 

GPUs though, it depends. If you're willing to sacrifice graphic fidelity for higher fps/playable fps (30+), then it can easily last you a long time. I replaced my 5870 that I bought in 2010, last year in 2015. I was still able to run nearly every games out there, at lower settings. Though since it was a low VRAM card (1GB), I couldn't play some games, like Shadow Of Mordor. But I could still play some games like GTA5.

 

So really, as long as you can make compromise, a PC can last you a LONG time.

 

Oh and SSDs to replace old, slower hard drives certainly help make things smoother.

I do a mobo/cpu/gpu upgrade every 3-4 years. Next upgrade I'm going to have to go through is going to be in a year or so, after AMD launches Zen/Polaris so I can go DDR4 at a more reasonable price (assuming Intel drops prices and AMD doesn't release flops)
