Low powered gaming laptop (940m)?

Hi,

I'm building a GTX 1070 build for my friend later this year (mainly for Overwatch, WoW and Hearthstone) but he also wants a low powered laptop for notes and mild gaming when he's away from his desktop. According to this the 940m can run Overwatch (probably the most demanding thing he'll throw at it) at just below 60fps at 720p, which isn't terrible for his situation. Is there a good laptop ~$500 you guys suggest for this? Portability is important too, so no clunky ThinkPads please.

Thanks,

-Chris

One of the best laptops for the price right now is the Acer Laptop Aspire E 15 E5-574G-54Y2 which currently is $480 on Newegg. It has a i5 6200u, a 940m, 8 gb ram, a 1080p tn screen, and a 1tb hard drive. If you could wait until the end of the year, it might be worth it to wait for Polaris 11 though.

I assume you mean portability as in thinness and lightness.  There's this interesting video about why thinkpads are actually super portable :)

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

How do these two compare? They look nearly identical

They are the same computer. The only difference is that one is a dark color, while the other one is white.

Really stupid question here, but why would you buy the GTX 1080 for those 3 games? It's an overkill by 100 million miles.

I said 1070, and mainly because I want this rig to last a very long time for him. I couldn't rationalize buying a used 900 series card over a 1070 considering the price to performance. Also, he may pick up other games in the future, just giving him options.

There's a black version of the Austin Evans one on the same Amazon page which has a different model # than the other black one

Suggestions? $550 is already kinda pushing the budget honestly. 940m is fine for his needs

You won't find much decent laptops in that price range.

That's the problem.  And, if you pay more to get something good, you've basically got the option between a slick ultrabook, and a powerful gaming laptop

My goal really isn't something "decent". This is intended to be a laptop for taking notes and maybe some light gaming, hence the 940m.

The thing is - those types of laptops tend to die within 2 years at most and usually after 1 year. That's wasting money.

Believe me, I got an $1100 laptop when I started university.  A lot of other people were on macbooks and cheap PCs.  I'm still using mine 5 years on, and very few of the people I was with can say the same ;)

So what would be a good choice?

Both of those are pretty heavy (personal experience with the 7559). Any slimmer ultrabook-ish options?

If you want slim, that means no dGPU and no gaming at all.

For slim - XPS13 or HP spectre
